Anthony Perez (Cofidis) es el primer líder del Tour de los Alpes Marítimos (antes Tour del Alto Var) tras lograr la victoria en Grasse, el primero de los tres finales en alto que ofrece la carrera. El francés de ascendencia andaluza, uno de los protagonistas de la fuga del día, aguantó el empuje del pelotón y se impuso en una llegada de 2.9km al 5.7% de pendiente media. Anthony Turgis (Total Direct Energie), segundo y compañero de escapada, y Michael Storer (Sunweb), tercero y el mejor del grupo de favoritos, completaron el podio.
Perez y Turgis fueron los más fuertes de un cuarteto que completaron Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (NTT) y Nigel Ellsay (Rally). Los aventureros llegaron a contar con seis minutos de adelanto sobre el pelotón, se presentaron con algo más de minuto y medio a los pies de la subida final y los dos más fuertes mantuvieron la diferencia para jugarse el triunfo.
Perez cruzó la línea de meta justo por delante de Turgis y con solo cuatro segundos sobre Storer. El australiano abrió un pequeño hueco respecto al pelotón, encabezado por Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), que entró seis segundos por detrás del ganador. Con el mismo tiempo terminaron Romain Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale), 10º, Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic), 11º, y Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo), 13º, los grandes candidatos al triunfo final, entre otros.
Se trata de la cuarta victoria para Perez en su quinto año como profesional, todos en la estructura de Cofidis. En 2017 abrió la cuenta con una etapa en el Tour de Luxemburgo (2.HC) y otra en el Tour de Gévaudan Languedoc-Roussillon (2.2) y la temporada siguiente volvió a ganar un parcial en Luxemburgo. En 2020 es el segundo triunfo del equipo crediticio tras el que logró Attilio Viviani en la jornada inaugural de La Tropicale Amissa Bongo.
El Tour de los Alpes Marítimos continúa el sábado con una segunda etapa que invita a la lucha de la general: serán 175.7 kilómetros entre Pégomas y el conocido Col d’Eze, más propio de la París-Niza, una subida de 4.6km al 6.3% de pendiente media.
