Dylan Groenewegen es el primer líder del Tour de Hungría gracias a su victoria al sprint en la etapa inaugural de la carrera. El neerlandés sumó su cuarto triunfo de la temporada al vencer por apenas milímetros a Sam Bennett, que había partido en cabeza en la llegada. El ciclista del Bora fue posicionado perfectamente por su compañero Danny Van Poppel, pero Groenewegen pudo superarle justo sobre la línea de meta. Caleb Ewan se vio algo encerrado por Phil Bauhaus en la pelea por la posición y solo pudo ser tercero. En esta pelea no pudo meterse Fabio Jakobsen, que terminó sexto por detrás de Álvaro José Hodeg.
La llegada estuvo condicionada por una caída numerosa ocurrida en el último kilómetro en la parte trasera del pelotón, que afectó, entre a otros, al colombiano Egan Bernal, que acabó la jornada bastante maltrecho. El resto de la etapa, de perfil prácticamente llano, tuvo el único protagonismo de los cinco hombres que conformaron la fuga. Matus Soteck (ATT Investments), Balazs Rozsa (Epronex), Zeteny Szijarto (Selección de Hungría), Ward Vanhoof (Flanders) y Charles Planet (Novo Nordisk) rodaron en cabeza hasta ser neutralizados a 27 kilómetros de meta. La carrera continuará este jueves camino de Keszthely con otra jornada para velocistas.
