Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) se ha impuesto al sprint en la primera etapa del Tour de Omán, de 138.5 kilómetros entre Al Sawadi Beach y Suhar Corniche. El noruego ha sido el más rápido en la recta final de 1.300 metros en el paseo marítimo de la localidad omaní. Bryan Coquard (Vital Concept – B&B Hotels), segundo, y Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis), tercero, le han acompañado en el podio, mientras que Mikel Aristi (Euskadi – Murias) ha cruzado la línea de meta en sexta posición como primer español.
Se trata de la primera victoria de Kristoff esta temporada y la novena en su carrera en el Tour de Omán desde que se estrenó en 2014. Es el ciclista que más veces ha levantado los brazos en la prueba. El del noruego es el quinto triunfo del año para el UAE Team Emirates: Jasper Philipsen abrió la cuenta en el Tour Down Under, Fernando Gaviria hizo doblete en la Vuelta a San Juan y Sebastián Molano sumó un parcial en el Tour de Colombia.
El Euskadi – Murias, único equipo español en la salida, ha completado un brillante su debut en la prueba omaní. Primero, Sergio Rodríguez se ha metido en la escapada del día junto a Michael Schär (CCC), Alexis Guerin (Delko Marseille Provence) y Emil Planckaert (Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise). Los fugados han alcanzado una ventaja de 4:30, pero el pelotón les ha controlado en todo momento y han tumbado su intento a unos cinco kilómetros para la llegada.
La actuación del conjunto vasco no se acaba ahí. Y es que Mikel Aristi, su hombre rápido y podio en la tercera etapa de la Estrella de Bessèges, se ha metido en la volata y ha terminado en una digna sexta posición. El velocista de Bergara solo ha sido superado por Kristoff, Coquard y Bouhanni, además de Giacomo Nizzolo (Dimension Data), cuarto, y Niccolò Bonifazio (Direct Energie).
Aristi ha terminado por delante de nombres fuertes como Boy Van Poppel (Roompot – Charles), Magnus Cort Nielsen (Astana) o André Greipel (Arkéa – Samsic), que ha pagado el esfuerzo para reingresar en el pelotón tras sufrir un pinchazo dentro de los diez kilómetros finales.
Los sprinters darán un paso atrás en la segunda etapa, de 156 kilómetros desde Royal Cavalry hasta Al-Bustan, terreno familiar para los clasicómanos más explosivos. Una combinación de escalada, descensos y caminos estrechos en los últimos 30 kilómetros reducirá el tamaño del gran grupo. Nathan Haas (Katusha) ganó un sprint de diez hombres en el mismo lugar el pasado año.
