Sam Bennett (Bora) se quedó con la victoria al sprint en la primera etapa del 55° Presidencial Tour de Turquía, sobre un trazado de 156.7 kilómetros entre Estambul y Tekirdağ. El velocista irlandés se enfundó el maillot líder de la prueba World Tour.
Desde la plaza de Sultanahmet, con la imponente Mezquita Azul y Santa Sofía de testigo, la jornada dio inicio con una gran cantidad de público a cada lado del camino. En los kilómetros iniciales, el pelotón dejó ir a seis hombres: Robredo, De Rossi, Fortunato, Oronte, De Vylder y Samli, quienes animaron las acciones desde la fuga del día.
Los seis gozaron del permiso del grupo principal y encabezaron la etapa con una renta máxima superior a los tres minutos. Sin embargo, con un buen cartel de sprinters, los equipos World Tour no dejarían pasar la oportunidad de luchar por la victoria de etapa.
Así, Bora-hansgrohe, Lotto Soudal y Deceuninck-Quick Step llevaron las riendas del pelotón y los mantuvieron bajo control en todo momento. Entre los fugados, los ataques se dieron lejos de meta, dejando a Oronte y Samli en vanguardia, aún con 35 km para el final. Con apenas un minuto de diferencia, el gran grupo no tardaría en absorber al resto de aventureros.
Por su parte, el dúo en cabeza estiraría su fuga hasta los últimos 22 kilómetros. De allí en más, los conjuntos de la máxima categoría viajaron en vanguardia y armaron sus trenes de velocidad de cara a una definición en sprint masivo.
En los metros decisivos, Deceuninck-Quick Step realizó un gran lanzamiento para Fabio Jakobsen, a quien dejó de cabeza a 150 metros del cierre. Sin embargo, un espectacular Sam Bennett volvió a reinar en tierras turcas y se quedó con un claro triunfo por delante del neerlandés, convirtiéndose en el primer líder.
