Jordi Meeus sigue siendo el último ganador de etapa en los Campos Elíseos de París. Fue en 2023 y en 2024 no lo pudo repetir por el cambio al final de Niza y su formato contrarreloj, pero sobre todo porque el belga no estuvo seleccionado por el Red Bull para la gran cita francesa centrado en el liderato del esloveno Primoz Roglic, posteriormente retirado por caída. Meeus hubo de conformarse con el calendario alternativo y no ha tardado nada en demostrar su velocidad al vencer en la primera etapa del Tour de Valonia belga que le reporta además el maillot de líder.
El letón Madis Mihkels (Intermarché) y el francés Paul Penhoet (Gorupama) completaron el podio de la primera llegada masiva condicionada por el error de una moto de televisión en una rotonda en el kilómetro final que desvió a varios corredores en cabeza del grupo. El sub-26 Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar) fue el mejor español en el puesto 14º.
Para Meeus es su segunda victoria de 2024 tras la 3ª etapa de Noruega y undécima desde que debutó en 2018 con el SEG.
Kenay De Moyer (Pauwels Sauzen), Michiel Lambrecht (Bingoal) y Anders Skaarseth (Uno-X) fueron los primeros fugados de la edición 2024 con cuatro minutos de ventaja máxima siendo Fleurus el último en ser alcanzado a 52 kilómetros de meta. Después lo probaron Matteo Trentin (Tudor), Benoit Cosnefroy y Dries de Bondt (Decathlon), Tibor del Grosso (Alpecin B) y Pim Ronhaar (Baloise).
El siguiente lo protagonizaron Corbin Strong (Israel), Alex Kirsch (Lidl) y Andreas Kron (Lotto), pero sin continuidad. El despiste de la moto provocó la caída de Jasper de Buyst (Lotto), Alberto Dainese (Tudor), Iván García Cortina (Movistar) y Louis Barré (Arkéa), que benefició indirectamente a Meeus en el desenlace.
2ª: Martes 23 julio. Saint Ghislain (13:04)-Ouffet (17:30), 184 kms

DECLARACIONES
Jordi Meeus (Red Bull): «Estoy contento de haber ganado hoy (lunes). En una o dos ocasiones se me escaparon escapadas peligrosas, pero mi equipo controló bien las cosas para devolverme a la cabeza. Después del Petit Try, mis compañeros de equipo impusieron un ritmo alto para favorecer el sprint y funcionó. Me gusta correr en esta región: nunca es realmente llano sin ser demasiado duro, así que el recorrido me venía bien. Además, ayer domingo reconocí la etapa final. El sábado volví de una concentración en altitud de tres semanas en Livigno. Así que tenía que ver si mis piernas respondían bien. Obviamente me sentí bien, aunque creo que podría ser incluso mejor con la sucesión de días de carrera. Nuestro objetivo era ganar una etapa y eso es lo que hemos hecho. Ahora vamos a intentar ganar otra. Espero conservar el maillot. Veremos qué pasa en los próximos días, con vistas a los Tours de Polonia y Alemania».
