1ª: Jueves 8 febrero. Dubai Miracle Garden-Dubai Harbour (122 Km)
En la primera carrera del año para Lorena Wiebes, la gran dominadora de los sprints en la actualidad, y la primera prueba de la temporada para el SD Worx, el equipo líder de las principales carreras del mundo, no hubo margen para una mínima sorpresa. La neerlandesa se hizo con la victoria en el primer gran sprint del UAE Tour, prueba emiratí que celebra su segunda edición en la máxima categoría de la UCI. El recorrido por el desierto del emirato de Dubái se saldó con unos breves intentos de fuga, algunas montoneras y un sprint en el que el SD Worx plasmó su dominio con un tren del sprint de máxima calidad en el que Lotte Kopecky situó a Wiebes en la rampa de lanzamiento para hacerse con su 72ª victoria como profesional.
El Top Girls italiano y el Tashkent uzbeko, dos de los equipos más modestos de la carrera, fueron los principales animadores de una jornada relativamente tranquila. Iris Monticolo lo probó de salida, pero fue su compañera Alice Palazzi la que logró marcharse en cabeza en solitario poco después. Tras ser alcanzada por el grupo, lo probó Anna Kuskova, mientras que en la parte final del día fueron Gaia Segato y Yanina Kuskova las encargadas de mover la carrera. Hubo tiempo para un último ataque de la campeona austriaca Carina Schrempf (Fenix), que fue neutralizada dentro del kilómetro final.
La pelea por los sprints intermedios permitió a Lotte Kopecky, Loes Adegeest y Karlijn Swinkels bonificar algunos segundos que les permiten escalar en la general. En el apartado de caídas, hubo dos grandes montoneras, una al principio de la etapa, que afectó a Elisa Longo Borghini y, en la parte final, otra muy numerosa en la que se fueron al suelo Emma Norsgaard, Elise Uijen, Femke Markus o Claire Steels, entre otras. En la aproximación a meta, Canyon, UAE o FDJ controlaron el grupo, pero SD Worx impuso su poderío en favor de Wiebes, que cruzó la meta por delante de Rachele Barbieri (DSM) y Chiara Consonni (UAE). La sorpresa positiva la dio la joven Laura Ruiz (Movistar) que acabó en séptima posición.
PRÓXIMA ETAPA
2ª: Viernes 9 febrero. Al Mirfa Bab Al Nojoum-Madinat Zayed (113 Km)

La etapa del desierto. Parte de Al Mirfa, en la costa del Golfo Arábigo, y atraviesa una gran porción de desierto (más de 60 km) hasta Madinat Zayed. Hay carreteras anchas y rectas salpicadas por secuencias de rotondas una vez que se llega a la zona urbanizada.

Lorena Wiebes: «Es genial ganar inmediatamente la primera carrera de la temporada. La salida del equipo fue una carrera de manual. Habíamos decidido de antemano que correríamos por el lado derecho porque el viento venía de la izquierda. También queríamos esperar el mayor tiempo posible para no tener que correr a tope contra el viento. Hubo caos en el pelotón en el último tramo largo, pero con nosotros todos se mantuvieron tranquilos. Me pusieron en marcha perfectamente. Me alegro de haber terminado también. Mañana normalmente se presenta una nueva oportunidad de sprint. El maillot de líder nos creará un poco más de presión. Sin duda, el viento jugará un papel importante, pero estamos preparados para cualquier aficionado».
Rachele Barbieri: «Estoy muy contento de conseguir este resultado en mi primera carrera con el equipo, es muy bonito. Las chicas hicieron un trabajo increíble para mantenerme a salvo todo el día y ponerme en la mejor posición posible para cuando pudiera lanzar mi sprint, para luego obtener el segundo lugar. Creo que con este día y la forma en que rodamos juntos, demostramos a todos que estamos listos para ser los mejores líderes del pelotón. Estoy muy emocionado de poder competir con este grupo que tenemos y con Charlotte como nuestra finalista de sprint cuando vuelva a estar en forma. Seguiremos probando cosas aquí y estamos deseando que lleguen los próximos días».
