Tercera victoria de la temporada para Fabio Jakobsen tras las logradas en Valencia y un nuevo éxito para el equipo Quick-Step que no dio opciones al resto de velocistas lanzando de forma impecable el esprint de su líder. Jordi Meeus fue desclasificado por cerrar a Alexander Kristoff (3º) y el noruega y Bryan Coquard (2º) cerraron el podio del día. Apenas una treintena de ciclista pudieron salvar la jornada sin problemas después de que dos caídas muy numerosas y un ritmo endiablado en el pelotón seleccionaran la carrera. Ion Izagirre fue el único español que resistió en el grupo cabecero, donde tampoco cedieron tiempo favoritos como Evenepoel o Pidcock.
Hubo presencia española en la fuga del día, al lograr escaparse Asier Etxeberria (Euskaltel-Euskadi) junto a Fábio Oliveira (ABTF-Feirense), Hugo Nunes (Rádio Popular-Boavista) y João Matias (Tavfer-Mortágua). Su ventaja no fue nunca muy elevada, rondando siempre los dos minutos, por lo que parecía complicado que pudieran emular a sus compañeros de la Vuelta a Andalucía y llegar a meta. Oliveira sufría en la ascensión a Nave, segundo puerto puntuable del día, pero nada parecía alterar el orden en la carrera.
Sin embargo, a 40 kilómetros de la meta, una numerosa caída en el centro del pelotón desató las hostilidades. Entre los ciclistas más afectados se encontraba el colombiano Juan Sebasián Molano, uno de los favoritos para la victoria en Lagos. El grupo no esperó a los ciclistas afectados y varios equipos aceleraron mucho el ritmo. Alpecin, FDJ, Quick-Step o Intermarché tomaban las posiciones delanteras, tratando de colocar bien a sus líderes. Esta situación hizo que la fuga quedara neutralizada muy pronto. Ciclistas como Xabier Mikel Azparren lo probaron tímidamente, pero a tal velocidad era imposible pensar en un desenlace diferente al de una llegada masiva.
Lo que sí que hizo el grupo fue seleccionarse aún más. Tras un pequeño parón del grupo obligado por el viento de cara, el ritmo volvió a elevarse de golpe tras un movimiento de los hombres del Alpecin y esto provocó otra montonera a 16 kilómetros de meta. Tan solo una treintena de corredores resistían delante, con los conjuntos de los velocistas controlando la carrera. También aparecía INEOS bien posicionado pensando en colocar a Hayter o Pidcock. El tren de Quick-Step, liderado por Evenepoel y Lampaert realizó una aproximación a meta fulgurante y Jakobsen solo tuvo que rematar la faena. Meeus, Kristoff y Coquard solo pudieron pelear por la segunda plaza y un contacto entre los dos primeros provocó la sanción para el belga y que fuera el galo quien remontó hasta dicha plaza. En la segunda jornada llegará el primer final en alto, con el tradicional ascenso a Fóia.

DECLARACIONES
Fabio Jakobsen (1º): «Estoy contento de haber ganado de nuevo en Lagos. Conozco muy bien esta llegada porque vamos a un campo de entrenamiento cerca de aquí y ya he ganado aquí dos veces», dijo el holandés. Sin embargo, me dolió. «Porque antes hicimos una pequeña subida y no pude recuperarme en la bajada después de eso. Luego, fue sólo el acelerador a fondo hasta la línea. Hoy ha sido un buen sprint de veinte segundos. He pasado un buen invierno. Habíamos explorado el recorrido, así que sabíamos lo que iba a pasar. El equipo estuvo perfecto, me llevó perfectamente a falta de doscientos metros, tras los cuales pude iniciar mi sprint. Tengo que dar las gracias a Remco. Está aquí para la clasificación general, pero hace perfectamente su trabajo en el lanzamiento».
Alexander Kristoff (3º): «Meeus ha cambiado de trayectoria, yo pasaba por la izquierda, tenía espacio, me ha desplazado hacia las barreras, he golpeado a muchos espectadores con el hombro, no estoy muy contento por ello. El final era técnico con rotondas, estaba un poco lejos, no podíamos pasar delante del QuickStep y cuando estás lejos siempre hay el riesgo de quedarse atascado, pero sentía que tenía una línea limpia, así que estoy decepcionado y enfadado por no haber podido hacer mi sprint hasta la meta».
Jordi Meeus: «Hemos trabajado bien todo el día, y al final hemos estado en la posición correcta para evitar la caída. Los chicos me han ayudado perfectamente a coger la rueda de Jakobsen, pero hoy no tenía las piernas para desafiarle. Aun así, estoy contento con el resultado, porque después de Saudí perdí unos días de entrenamiento porque no me sentía bien. Descender después fue una decisión equivocada, creo. No cambié de línea y sentí que hicimos un sprint normal. De todas formas tengo que aceptar la decisión e intentaré luchar los próximos días».
