Un año después de su última victoria en la accidentada jornada inaugural del Tour de Francia 2020, Alexander Kristoff volvió a festejar con rabia un triunfo de etapa. Lo hizo en la segunda etapa del Tour de Alemania, en una de sus últimas carreras con el equipo UAE, ya que en 2022 recalará en el Intermarché-Wanty. El noruego lanzó pronto el esprint, pero fue sobrepasado rápidamente por el alemán Bauhaus. Pese a ello, no se dio por vencido y, contra todo pronóstico devolvió el adelantamiento a su rival para ser primero. Todo ello ante la atenta mirada de un Pascal Ackermann que esta vez solo pudo ocupar el último escalón del podio.
El ciclista de Bora mantendrá el liderato después de una dura jornada pasada por agua de principio a fin en la que Louis Vervaeke (Alpecin) fue la principal amenaza para los hombres rápidos, resistiendo el empuje del pelotón hasta el último paso por meta ya dentro del circuito final. El resto de compañeros de fuga -Marc Soler (Movistar), Kyle Murphy (Rally), Kiko Galván (Kern Pharma) y Jannis Peter (selección de Alemania) cedieron varios kilómetros antes que el belga. En la última subbida trató de ganar unos metros Zimmermann, que bonificó en el punto intermedio, pero fue bien controlado por los hombres de Bahrain, que finalmente no vieron recompensado su trabajo.

Hasta ahora mi temporada no había sido buena, aunque estuve a punto de ganar el Tour de Noruega. Al final lo he logrado. Estuvo muy reñido con Bauhaus, no estaba seguro de haber ganado, pero luego vi las imágenes y pude celebrarlo».
