Stefan Küng (Groupama FDJ) se ha marcado una victoria en solitario a placer, protagonizando una escapada desde el génesis de la etapa con cinco compañeros en fuga que ha tenido premio final, con el oscense Jorge Arcas (Movistar) entre los aventureros. Triunfo debido en gran medida a la precaución mostrada por trabajar en su captura debido a las condiciones adversas climatológicas de lluvia y el peligro por el asfalto mojado. El Giro de Italia está cerca. El rodador suizo además logra su segundo triunfo de la temporada y suma el séptimo para el equipo francés.
En cuanto al sprint del pelotón, Sam Bennett (Bora hansgrohe) se impuso al italiano Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Merida) a casi un minuto de distancia del excelso rodador suizo. Sin cambios en la general, Roglic (Jumbo Visma) sigue dominando la clasificación un día más.
Jorge Arcas, Gediminas Bagdonas, Stefan Küng, Frederik Backaert, Nathan Brown y Claudio Imhof tuvieron recompensa a su esfuerzo por su inconformismo de un final previsiblemente al sprint, su rebeldía tuvo premio al menos para uno de ellos. Estos seis corredores lograron una ventaja máxima de cinco minutos, pero realmente no tenían una visión real de la victoria, el pelotón simplemente mantuvo la diferencia cocinando lentamente la escapada.
Pero apareció el elemento diferencial, el clima, poco favorable para los corredores, sin embargo, el aventurado sexteto nos regaló una carrera pulsando la valentía de un temeroso pelotón, tirado en primer término por Bora hansgrohe y posteriormente por Deceuninck Quick Step, por Bennett y Viviani respectivamente.
En la parte delantera, el local Küng demostró ser el más fuerte. El corredor de Groupama-FDJ logró librarse de sus compañeros uno por uno. Imhof, Brown, Arcas … Ya no pudieron seguir el incremento del ritmo de marcha contrarreloj que impuso el gigante Küng. Bagdonas y Backaert lograron relevarse en su persecución pero no por mucho tiempo.
A unos veinte kilómetros de la línea de meta, y si alguna vez la imaginación de Kung elucubró una victoria en solitario, debió ser en su país debía con el sello propio de un rodador sobresaliente y aderezado con una inclemente lluvia que jugó en favor del más valiente. El suizo se quedó sólo y no pararía hasta el final cuando por detrás definitivamente sin ver menguar la diferencia, de 1’20» constante, tiraron la toalla.
Luego llegaría gustándose primero a Fribourg, después de una etapa que no tendría historia salvo por su gran actuación. Un minuto después del victorioso Küng, Bennett ganó el sprint por el segundo lugar, por delante de Sonny Colbrelli. Es la segunda victoria de la temporada para Küng, de 25 años. Anteriormente ganó la contrarreloj individual del Volta ao Algarve.
