Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo), se ha impuesto en la tercera etapa del Tour de California, de 197 kilómetros y con la línea de meta situada en el circuito de velocidad de Laguna Seca. El letón, que suma su tercer triunfo en la ronda californiana, ha superado a Sean Bennett (Hagens Berman Axeon), mientras que el grupo de favoritos ha entrado a ocho segundos. Egan Bernal (Sky) se mantiene en lo más alto de la clasificación general.
Con 197 kilómetros por delante, Ian Garrison (Hagens Berman Axeon) se asoció con Evan Huffman -doble ganador de etapa en la edición de 2017- y Robin Carpenter (Rally Cycling) y los tres estadounidenses se marcharon en fuga desde prácticamente la salida. El trío alcanzó poco más de cuatro minutos como renta máxima, pero la etapa, además de larga, concentraba la ‘chicha’ en la parte final: tres cotas puntuables -dos de 2ª y una de 3ª- en los últimos 30 kilómetros, la última un muro de 1.100 metros al 10,3% además justo antes de ingresar en el circuito de Laguna Seca.
Por tanto, el pelotón dejó hacer a los fugados, aunque por si acaso el Bora estuvo atento pensando en Peter Sagan. Quick-Step también confiaba en Gaviria y se puso a trabajar. En la descarnada carretera del descenso del East Carmel Valley Road, a 52 de meta, Carpenter quedó atrás, con lo que las fuerzas en cabeza se igualaron, aunque fuera numéricamente.
Más que una asociación Garrison-Huffman, el primero tiraba y el segundo resistía. El infortunio mecánico del corredor del Rally dejó solo en cabeza de carrera al joven Garrison (20 años). Acabó el descenso, comenzaron los repechos previos al siguiente alto de 2ª categoría, corto pero duro, y Huffman, junto a Toms Skujins (Trek) y Logan Owen (EF) dieron caza a Garrison. Huffman volvió a ceder y Garrison resistió con los dos ‘nuevos’ para afrontar la siguiente cota de 2ª, la penúltima, en cuyas primeras rampas fueron absorbidos por el pelotón.
El Sky tomó el mando. Skujins –vencedor este año en el Trofeo Lloseta-Andratx– lo volvió a intentar junto a otro Hagens, en este caso Sean Bennett. Ambos coronaron con 15 segundos sobre un pelotón en el que Bora había vuelto a colaborar para no dejar nada al azar. Azar que jugó una mala pasada a Fernando Gaviria: el colombiano pinchó a 7 para meta y perdió contacto con el grupo principal, a punto de arrancar las rampas de acceso al circuito.
En el pelotón, Sagan, el gran favorito, remontaba posiciones pero Skujins y Bennett resistieron contra todo pronóstico el temido muro y accedieron al asfalto de Laguna Seca con una ligera ventaja. En la última rampa el letón dejó atrás a su compañero y afrontó el sacacorchos y los últimos metros con la distancia suficiente para permitirse un descontrolado baile sobre la bicicleta antes de cruzar la línea de meta. No era para menos.
