Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) se ha impuesto en la tercera etapa de la Vuelta a Eslovenia, de 170 kilómetros entre las localidades de Zalec e Idrija, marcada por la subida a Dole (2ª), de 5km al 9.3% de pendiente media y que los ciclistas han coronado a 20km de la llegada. Ulissi ha demostrado ser el más fuerte cuesta arriba y en la parte final, cuando ha dejado de rueda a Aleksandr Vlasov (Gazprom RusVelo) para llegar en solitario y enfundarse el maillot de líder.
El ruso ha cruzado la línea de meta en la segunda posición a 12 segundos y Giovanni Visconti (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM) ha sido tercero, en cabeza de un grupo perseguidor en el que también han entrado Tadej Pogacar (UAE), Andrea Vendrame (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec), Jan Polanc (UAE), Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott) y Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy), los más fuertes de la carrera. Joan Bou (Nippo-Vini Fantini-Faizanè), en el 21º puesto, ha sido el primer español en la llegada, con el mismo tiempo que Luka Mezgec (Mitchelton-Scott), décimo y que ha perdido el maillot de líder.
En un calco de la jornada anterior, los equipos UAE y Mitchelton-Scott han encabezado el ritmo del pelotón en persecución de los fugados Marco Maronese (Bardiani-CSF), Lorenzo Fortunato (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM), David Per (Adria Mobil) y Benjamin Hill (Ljubljana Gusto Santic), que han llegado a contar con siete minutos de ventaja pero han sido alcanzados en las primeras rampas de la subida a Dole. Allí se ha destapado de nuevo Ulissi, que ha roto el grupo en pedazos. Solo su compañero Pogacar, Chaves y Vlasov le han seguido y el resto ya es historia.
El italiano suma su 32ª victoria como profesional, la segunda de la temporada después de vencer en el GP Ciudad de Lugano y la vigésima para el equipo UAE Team Emirates en 2019.
