Travis McCabe (Floyd’s Pro Cycling) ha logrado la victoria en la tercera etapa del Tour de Langkawi (2.HC), de 192.6 kilómetros entre las localidades de Muar y Putrajaya, en Malasia. El estadounidense ha sorprendido a los equipos de los velocistas con un ataque a dúo ya en último kilómetro y ha cruzado la línea de meta con dos segundos de ventaja con el pelotón. Matteo Pelucchi (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) y Andrea Guardini (Bardiani-CSF) han completado el podio.
McCabe es también el nuevo líder de la clasificación general al arrebatarle la primera posición a Marcus Culey (Team Sapura), que es ahora segundo a cuatro segundos del estadounidense tras cruzar la línea de meta en un segundo corte del pelotón, mientras que Michael Freiberg (Sunshine Coast) es tercero a 13. El catalán Benjamín Prades (Team Ukyo), único español en la prueba asiática, terminó la etapa en el 48º puesto y es 21º en la general.
Se trata de la novena victoria como profesional de McCabe, un ciclista de 29 años que afronta su sexta temporada como profesional, la primera en el equipo de Floyd Landis tras dos años en la categoría Profesional Continental con el maillot del UnitedHealthcare. Y es el cuarto triunfo para la estructura con base canadiense tras los éxitos de Jonathan Clarke en el Tour de Taiwan y Alexander Cowan en el Joe Martin.
La próxima etapa
El martes 9 de abril se celebra la etapa reina del Tour de Langkawi, de 114.2 kilómetros entre Sham Alam y la ya mítica subida la carrera, Genting Highlands, de 20.5km al 7.5% de pendiente media, en la que se decidirá la clasificación general de la carrera.
