A Pascal Ackermann no le importó el monumental aguacero durante toda la quinta y corta etapa del Giro de Italia para repetir su éxito de la segunda jornada vestido de morado como líder de una regularidad en la que se afianza. Fernando Gaviria -intentando eclipsar los presuntos dopajes de sus compañeros del UAE Emirates Molano y Durasek– inició la llegada empapada, pero Ackermann, haciendo equilibrios, supo encontrar la estela del sudamericano para remacharle sin remisión y engordar las cifras del Bora alemán que ya llega a las 23 primeras plazas en esta campaña. Juanjo Lobato -último en el día anterior por el célebre accidente- se recuperó y fue el mejor de los españoles en la 14ª posición.
Una jornada en la que la otra noticia fue el abandono en el primer kilómetro de uno de los grandes favoritos y segundo el año pasado, Tom Dumoulin, que no soportó los dolores de su rodilla golpeada en la caída de la víspera y ante el panorama climático que se le presentaba. El Tour de Francia y/o la Vuelta a España le esperan en su agenda para un corredor que había dejado de lado la temporada para centrarse única y exclusivamente en la «corsa rosa» tras la derrota del año pasado ante la exhibición de Froome. Una consecuencia fatal para el corredor, su equipo Sunweb, la carrera y el ciclismo en general, poniendo de nuevo en duda la absurda norma de la reducción de corredores por equipos en las pruebas por mor de la seguridad y evitar caídas. Situaciones que se seguirán produciendo independientemente del grosor de la lista de participantes.
Tras dos etapas de más de 200 kilómetros y cuando parecía que iba a producirse un pequeño receso competitivo, la borrasca y su pertinaz lluvia quiso visitar la carrera para darle más épica a la crónica final. Ello no fue óbice para que de nuevo los invitados Miguel Flórez (Androni), Enrico Barbin y Umberto Orsini (Bardiani), Iván Santaromita (Nippo) y el «world tour» y liberado de Dumoulin, Louis Vervaeke (Sunweb) abandonaran por delante a todos los demás.
Un movimiento siempre controlado y más cuando los corredores -liderados por Vincenzo Nibali– convencieron los organizadores para tomar los tiempos de cara a la clasificación general en el primer paso por la meta. Mientras el belga Vervaeke se fue en solitario, pero su mínima ventaja se quedó en nada a 23 kilómetros del final. Entrados en el circuito y con el esloveno del Jumbo, Primoz Roglic ya asegurado con otra maglia rosa, el grupo se fracturó en dos porciones, quedando en cabeza el de los velocistas y sus lanzadores. A pesar de Deceuninck para Viviani y UAE para Gaviria, el trabajo y remate más eficaces fueron el del enrachado Bora y Pascal Ackermann, 25 años, 15 victorias y 5 en 2019. No parece que sea la última.
DECLARACIONES
Pascal Ackermann: “Hoy fue uno de estos días en los que me pregunté por qué soy ciclista. Teníamos que cambiarnos de ropa cada 30 segundos más o menos. Hacía frío. Mi objetivo para mi primer Giro era llegar siempre a Verona. Estoy en buena forma y hay más sprints por venir, más los sprints intermedios si es necesario, pero seguro que intentaré ganar la camiseta de la regularidad».
Primoz Roglic: «Fue la decisión correcta tomar los tiempos diez kilómtros antes del final. Siempre tratamos de mantenernos seguros. Ayer vimos cuánto se puede perder en una caída. El abandono de Tom Dumoulin no cambia mucho para mí. Lo único importante para mí es que nuestro equipo se mantenga concentrado y hagamos nuestro trabajo lo mejor que podamos. Mañana, ¿por qué no perder la maglia rosa? Parece una buena etapa para que la escapada tenga éxito».
