El malayo Mohd Harrif Saleh (Terengganu Inc. TSG) logró la victoria en la quinta etapa del 25º Tour de Langkawi, de 165.8 kilómetros entre las localidades de Kuala Kubu Baru e Ipoh. Es el segundo triunfo para el veterano velocista en la gran carrera de su país tras el que ya consiguió el año pasado en Melaka. Si en 2019 fue el más rápido por delante de Andrea Guardini, en esta ocasión se impuso por delante de Max Walscheid (NTT Pro Cycling) y Matteo Pelucchi (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè), dos nuevas víctimas ilustres. En la general sigue líder el italiano Danilo Celano (Team Sapura) a falta de tres etapas con un perfil eminentemente llano.
Puede resultar sorprendente la victoria de Saleh ante dos velocistas como Walscheid y Pelucchi, pero lo cierto es que el malayo de 31 años suma una veintena de éxitos en su trayectoria como profesional, aunque todos en el continente asiático y la mayoría en la categoría .2. Su equipo, además, compite con el Sapura por ser el mejor de Malasia y los dos tienen marcada en rojo la gran carrera de su país en el calendario.
Por otra parte, el único español en competición, Edgar Nohales Nieto (SSIOS Miogee) cruzó la línea de meta con el mismo tiempo que el ganador y mantiene la misma posición en la general (59ª) a 19:52 del líder. Finalmente, la sexta etapa del Tour de Langkawi cuenta con 150.6 kilómetros entre Taiping y la Isla de Penang. Las dos subidas puntuables en la segunda mitad del recorrido no parecen suficientes para evitar una nueva llegada masiva.
