Victoria de etapa en la séptima de la Vuelta a Suiza para el líder Egan Bernal (Ineos). El colombiano se impuso en solitario en la jornada más larga de la presente edición con 216.6 kilómetros entre Unternterzen y el duro San Gottardo y su empedrado interminable a más de 2.000 metros de altitud en el coloso alpino de 12km al 7.4% de pendiente media. Rohann Dennis (Bahrein Merida) se afianza en la segunda plaza de la general después de perder 23″ con el ganador de la etapa tras el gran apoyo de su compañero de equipo Domenico Pozzovivo que pudo acortar la pérdida de su líder pensando en la contrarreloj de este sábado.
El más destacado de los españoles fue el mallorquín Enric Mas, que atacó a falta de 3 kms de la llegada pero no pudo resistir el ímpetu del líder para finalizar en séptima posición y auparse a la séptima plaza de la CG a 2:07 de Bernal. En el lado negativo, el hasta entonces mejor corredor nacional en la clasificación general era Marc Soler que no pudo mantenerse en el grupo de los favoritos cediendo a falta de 2 kms de la meta, ahora se sitúa del líder a 4:14 en la posición 17ª.
Movimiento desde el inicio hasta la formación del grupo fugado del día que costó crear. Con un duro perfil de etapa por delante la escapada exigía calidad y serían Michael Albasini, Winner Anacona, Koen Bouwman, Mathias Frank y Steve Morabito junto a Tsgabu Grmay, Gino Mäder y Lukasz Wisniowski que extenderían su ventaja sistemáticamente a tres minutos al pie de la subida al Lukmanier.
En el pelotón, Ineos mantuvo al grupo delantero bajo control al servicio de su líder Egan Bernal, quien ayer se hizo con el maillot amarillo pero se quedó a 17” de la victoria parcial en favor del estrenado Antwan Tolkhoek. En el paso por Lukmanier, el ritmo en la fuga era demasiado alto para Wisniowski, quien por lo tanto tuvo que desistir. Los ahora siete escapados restantes llegaron a la cima con una ventaja de tres minutos y medio. Sin embargo, el camino hasta el final fue largo y especialmente difícil y la expectativa era que la batalla realmente comenzaría en la escalada final a San Gottardo.
En los últimos cincuenta kilómetros, el liderazgo de “los siete” disminuyó, de lo cual Albasini sería el siguiente en entregarse. A medida que avanzaba el ascenso del Sankt Gotthardpass se hacía más y más pesado para los de cabeza. Bouwman sería el primero en abrir “gas” pero sin embargo, el neerlandés se llevaría consigo al poderoso suizo Mathias Frank, quien demostró ser el más fuerte entre los fugitivos y sería el último en ser atrapado, a cinco kilómetros del final.
La carrera comenzaba de nuevo bajo el incesante control de Ineos. Lo intentaba el mallorquín Enric Mas a falta de 3 kms de coronar para lograr una distancia de 10 segundo sobre un grupo en el que Jonathan Castroviejo marcaba la pauta desmembrando el pelotón en apenas 20 corredor. Mas pudo oler el éxito, pero toda la esperanza se desvaneció cuando Bernal quiso rectificar el segundo puesto del día anterior. El colombiano se fue, de nuevo, en solitario pero esta vez Bahrein Merida se organizaba por detrás. Rohan Dennis, segundo en la clasificación general, recibió el generoso apoyo de su compañero Domenico Pozzovivo y, mientras el corredor de Ineos arruinaba los deseos de Mas, ambos mantuvieron la distancia con Bernal para aminorar lo máximo posible el impacto en tiempo.
Bernal se alzaría con la ansiada etapa y la bonificación de 10”. Pozzovivo, segundo, y Dennis, tercero, cruzaron la meta 23” más tarde que el gandor. Mas, fundido por el esfuerzo previo, entraría en meta junto Patrick Konrad, tercero en la CG, Jan Hirt y Tiesj Benoot. Gracias a esos segundos de bonificación la brecha en favor para Bernal se amplia pero no es definitiva, quien terminó el día a 41” de Dennis con la CRI de Goms de este sábado. Konrad se mantiene tercero a 1:13. Pozzovivo (a 1:17) y Hirt (a 1:19) completaron los 5 primeros. Mañana nos espera la contrarreloj con 19,2 kms para especialistas puros.
