8ª etapa: Martes 18 octubre. Kuah – Kuah (116 km)
El Tour de Langkawi y, con ello, la temporada 2022 de ciclismo de carretera llegaron a su fin y lo hicieron de forma casi inmejorable para los dos conjuntos españoles participantes en la ronda malasia. Burgos-BH, que en la jornada previa se quedó con la miel en los labios al no poder triunfar en fuga Adrià Moreno, en la última etapa sí tuvo premio. Alex Molenaar, que que salvo sorpresa no seguirá en el equipo español, batió a Jason Osborne evitando el que habría sido el cuarto triunfo de Alpecin en la ronda asiática y consiguiendo para el conjunto morado su tercera victoria de la temporada, tras las obtenidas por Langelotti en Portugal y Raim en Estonia.
La general, sin cambios tras el cambio de recorrido que no permitió realizar como estaba previsto el segundo gran final en alto de la carrera, quedó en manos de Iván Sosa, el más fuerte en el ascenso a Genting Highlands. El británico Hugh Carthy y el noruego Torstein Træen le acompañaron en el podio final. Movistar cierra así un final de temporada prácticamente perfecto en el que solo se resistió el triunfo de Max Kanter al sprint y que confirma su permanencia en la categoría World Tour los próximos tres años.
La jornada final, con salida en y llegada en Kuah, capital del archipiélago de Langkawi, repitió el recorrido de la etapa previa, añadiendo un giro más al circuito final. El guion de la carrera fue similar al del día previo, aunque en esta ocasión parecía más complicado que llegase la fuga a meta. Alpecin y Burgos habían posicionado, de nuevo, a dos hombres por delante: Jason Osborne y Alex Molenaar. Ambos tomaron ventaja junto a Hugo Toumire (Cofidis) dentro ya del circuito final, dejando atrás a sus tres compañeros de escapada: Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), cuyo equipo desciende a la categoría ProTeam, Cameron Scott (ARA Pro Racing) y Anatoliy Budyak (Terengganu).
Movistar y EF Education se encargaron de rebajar su ventaja hasta apenas 30 segundos, encabezando el trabajo en el pelotón bajo una intensa lluvia. Pero el ritmo acabó siendo insuficiente para completar la caza. Corredores como Lionel Taminiaux o Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg intentaron cerrar el hueco en solitario, pero la victoria estaba delante. El exremero alemán fue generoso en los relevos, pero no pudo batir a un rival más rápido que se despide del Burgos de la mejor manera posible, logrando un triunfo que le pone en el escaparate en busca de un contrato para 2023. El primer español de la jornada fue Ricardo Zurita, terminando 10º en un pelotón donde el más veloz fue Sebastián Molano.

DECLARACIONES
Alex Molenaar (Burgos): «Ha sido un día intenso, arrancando en la parte inicial para buscar la fuga. Al final me metí en un corte de seis y que tuvo todo el día en torno a 2 minutos. Toda la jornada «remando» y en el puerto se hizo la selección, nos marchamos tres y en el circuito pudimos consolidar nuestras opciones. Me quedé mano a mano con el ciclista de Alpecin y le he podido ganar. Muy contento de lograr la victoria para cerrar la temporada. Era súper importante para mí ganar hoy porque no tengo contrato para el año que viene, así que puedo demostrar aquí lo que soy capaz de hacer».
Iván Sosa (Movistar): «Hoy, más que un día nervioso, ha sido una jornada muy rápida y dura. Se ha hecho muy complicado controlar porque los corredores que iban en fuga eran muy fuertes y tener la carrera controlada ha sido duro. Los rivales no nos han hecho nada sencillas las cosas. Por eso sabe aún mejor esta victoria. Sobre todo, agradecido con todos los compañeros del equipo y el staff por todo el apoyo durante estos días desde que logré vestirme con esta camiseta. Han sido días complicados, en los que el pelotón, como digo, no nos lo ha puesto nada sencillo, pero hemos podido cerrar este 2022 de la mejor manera posible, logrando un segundo título y con la mejor energía para lo que viene en las próximas temporadas, después de una campaña difícil. Ahora tengo que pensar en recuperar, pero esta moral que nos da el triunfo ayudará mucho. Y poder mantener viva esa tradición de ganadores colombianos aquí en Asia también resulta muy bonito».
