Aunque no parecía, de entrada, excesivamente preocupante, la aventura del quinteto formado por Jonathan Clarke (UnitedHealthcare), Jetse Bol (Manzana Postobon), Simon Pellaud (Team Iluminate), José Rodolfo Serpa (GW-Shimano) y Rafael Montiel (Orgullo Paisa) acabó, como suele suceder en los circuitos urbanos en los que un pequeño grupo suele evolucionar más fluido y fácil que todo el pelotón, convirtiéndose en un auténtico dolor de cabeza para un gran grupo que, tras unos primeros kilómetros de cierta calma, estuvo siempre comandado por un Quick Step Floors comandado, de cara al sprint final, por un Fernando Gaviria ansioso por poder brindar un triunfo a sus paisanos.
En cualquier caso, la escuadra belga, ayudada en algunos momentos por la selección italiana, supo medir de forma inmejorable la situación y fue ya dentro de la última vuelta al circuito de 11 kilómetros que ha servido para abrir la competición cuando neutralizó al quinteto dejando todo listo para la disputa del sprint final.
Y fue ya en los últimos 5 kilómetros, cuando el tren de Gaviria, que sumó su segundo triunfo del año casi sin despeinarse, rodaba ya desbocado hacia la meta, cuando se produjo una caída en el pelotón que, entre otros corredores, afectó de lleno a Nairo Quintana (Movistar), que no pudo empezar de peor forma su campaña de 2018 aunque, dentro de lo malo, el de Boyacá pudo salvar la situación al volver a contactar con el pelotón y, de esa manera, no perder tiempo en la general.
El ganador de la etapa, Fernando Gaviria, es, además, el primer líder de la carrera.
