Ian Bibby, el británico del JLT Condor, es el primer líder del Tour de Japón (2.1) tras ser el más veloz en la etapa prólogo contrarreloj individual en Sakai sobre 2.600 metros. El italiano Canola y el también británico Wood ocuparon las siguientes posiciones.
Benjamí Prades, 24º a 6 segundos, fue el mejor del grupo de los españoles que completan Airán Fernández, José Vicente Toribio, Marcos García, Salvador Guardiola y el único sub-26 José Manuel Díaz.
