Gianni Moscon, lleva tres carreras y dos victorias después de su expulsión en el Tour de Francia por agresión y su posterior suspensión de cinco semanas. El italiano del Sky británico reapareció en la Coppa Agostoni con éxito, «descansó» en la Bernocchi y volvió a subir a los más alto del podio tras superar cómodamente al francés Romain Bardet (AG2R) y al también italiano Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain), los tres mejores al final de la prueba transalpina homenaje al exseleccionador local Alfredo Martini y que en 2018 ha pasado de dos etapas a una prueba de un día.
La carrera -en la que reaparecía Mikel Landa tras su caída en San Sebastián con posterior abandono y renuncia al Mundial– tuvo como primeros protagonistas a Gazzara (Sangemini), Teklehaimanot (Cofidis), Filosi y Fedeli (Delko) y Carlini (D’Amico). Tras este quinteto, la cabeza pasó a ser de Filosi y la dupla del Caja Rural formada por Celano e Irisarri, atrapados por Sky, AG2R y UAE antes de la última subida a Serra, donde Landa pasó dificultades subiendo.
El gallego Delio Fernández primero y después el suizo Mathias Frank retaron al pelotón, pero Sky, con Elissonde y el nuevo fichaje Dunbar acabaron por seleccionar la carrera. Y ahí fue cuando Moscon, Bardet y Pozzovivo, que conectó en la última bajada. Los tres se relevaron a la perfección aprovechando el caos del grupo perseguidor lo que propició el desenlace entre los tres.
