«Con 15 años, me levantaba a las 4:30 de la mañana para entrenar antes de ir al instituto, mientras soñaba con ganar una gran ronda». Así empezaba Chris Horner en twitter el relato de su carrera. El ganador de la Vuelta, que este mes cumple 42 años, no tiene equipo para el próximo año. La edad y la vigilancia de la Agencia Estadounidense contra el Dopaje, la USADA, no ayudan.
El veterano ciclista se animó ayer a hacer un repaso de su trayectoria en su cuenta de twitter, una manera de avisar de que no hay imposibles para él, que no se rinde y que el año próximo quiere seguir en la carretera. «Dormía en hoteles, en pensiones, en el coche o en bancos en el parque para poder ir a las carreras», recuerda. «Los equipos profesionales no me querían dar una oportunidad, así que compré mi licencia para poder competir como independiente», afirma. «Corrí durante años como profesional, sin sueldo, esperando ganar el mayor número de carreras posibles para pagar el alquiler», como publica larazon.es
«Ganaba el sueldo mínimo en Europa. Vivía en un pequeño apartamento. No tenía coche, ni ordenador, ni teléfono, ni televisión. Mi única compañía era un ‘walkman’». Regresó a casa. «Escuché que era demasiado viejo para volver a Europa. Vendí todo lo que tenía por tener otra oportunidad. Volé con sólo 140 »pavos» en el bolsillo», dice. «No tenía el respeto ni la confianza de un líder, pero con el apoyo de mi familia y mis amigos, lo conseguí». Ganó la Vuelta, cumplió su sueño. «Ahora tengo historias épicas que contar», dice. Pero no tiene equipo.
