Primoz Roglic no ha dejado ninguna limosna a nadie. El líder del UAE Tour se adjudicó la penúltima etapa como líder en el «segundo y medio» final en alto -Jebel Jais- de la ronda asiática del UCI World Tour con una exhibición de fuerza superando en el reducido sprint al lanzador Tom Dumoulin y David Gaudu. Alejandro Valverde -que se vio involucrado en una montonera nada más darse la salida- careció de la chispa que tuvo en la tercera jornada y no pudo pasar de la quinta plaza aunque conserva la segunda plaza de la general con la que previsiblemente cerrará su concurso.
La existencia de las bonificaciones y la voluntad de dar un golpe en la mesa y moral a todos hizo que Roglic mandara primero a su equipo Jumbo a reducir la escapada del día -formada por Hansen, Morkov, Clarke, Sieberg, Viviani, Tratnik, Albasini y Rosskopf– y después al formidable Laurens De Plus a imprimir una velocidad lo suficientemente elevada para evitar movimientos en los 2 kilómetros finales, justo después de neutralizar a Rosskopf, el más resistente de los fugados en el nublado y arenoso final.
El exsaltador de esquí esloveno se sentía fuerte y quería el doble premio que alcanzó con una superioridad casi insultante. Solo Dumoulin trató de quebrar el doblete pero al holandés del Sunweb le faltó también ese punto necesario para estrenar su campaña. Sí lo ha hecho Roglic que va camino de llevarse su tercera vuelta del World Tour tras las del País Vasco y Romandía del año pasado. A su derecha tendrá al campeón del mundo.
DECLARACIONES
Primoz Roglic: “Hoy, demostramos lo fuertes que somos como equipo. Estoy muy feliz de haber podido recompensar los esfuerzos de mis compañeros con una victoria de etapa. Los chicos me mantuvieron a salvo y al frente. Esta victoria es para ellos». Mañana, el UAE Tour finalizará con una etapa en Dubai. «Un nuevo día. Hoy me fue bien con respecto a la clasificación general, pero tendremos que mantenernos enfocados y asegurarnos de que no nos sorprendan”.
Alejandro Valverde: “He estado más o menos donde esperaba y, a la vez, me he encontrado mejor durante la etapa que lo que creía antes de arrancar. He pasado una noche un poco ‘rara’, con décimas de fiebre, y estoy contento con cómo ha terminado la cosa. Ha sido una subida muy rápida, siempre a alto ritmo, y poder estar ahí me deja, al menos, satisfecho. El nivel durante toda la carrera ha sido bueno, pero aún me falta un poco de chispa. Ha sido una vuelta bonita, pero muy exigente también con el viento. Las sensaciones en la ascensión no eran tampoco tan malas -si no, no hubiese estado ahí en cabeza-, pero tampoco me he sentido como me habría gustado”.
