Astana firmó su decimosexta victoria de la campaña con el danés Magnus Cort, el más listo de la fuga en la etapa más larga de la París-Niza con final en Pelussin, superando a todo un experto como el belga Thomas de Gendt. El nórdico atacó en el último kilómetro al corredor del Lotto, y a los italianos Giulio Ciccone y Alessandro de Marchi, los más fuertes de los escapados de la jornada.
Un día que sirvió para que Michal Kwiatkowski sucediera como líder a Dylan Groenewegen que no aguantó en el exigente recorrido, por lo que el polaco del Sky pasa a ser el mejor provisional por delante de Luis León Sánchez, justo antes de la decisiva contrarreloj individual.
Después de diez kilómetros ya se formó la escapada con Thomas De Gendt (Lotto), Christoph Pfingsten (Bora), Julien Bernard (Trek), Olivier Le Gac (Groupama), Mathias Le Turnier (Cofidis), Alessandro de Marchi (CCC) y Kevin Reza (Vital Concept) a los que se unieron tres kilómetros después Magnus Cort (Astana), Giulio Ciccone (Trek), Elie Gesbert (Arkea), Damien Gaudin (Direct Energie), Eduard Grosu y Evaldas Siskevicius (Delko).
En el km 79.5, el pelotón se detuvo por un paso a nivel, lo que obligó a los organizadores a detener al grupo fugado 3:30, el mismo tiempo del grupo encabezado por Groenewegen. Hasta 6:40 en el kilómetro 114 llegaron a tener como ventaja máxima y en la Cote de Condrieu, Thomas De Gendt destrozó la escapada -ya es líder de la montaña– quedándose en cabeza el belga, De Marchi, Gesbert, Ciccone, Bernard, Le Turnier y Cort Nielsen. Y de ellos De Gendt, De Marchi, Ciccone y Cort en la última ascensión puntuable. El grupo no se puso de acuerdo y permitió que los aventureros se salieran un día con la suya. Cort no quiso esperar al sprint -era el más rápido- y sorprendió a todos para rubricar su ya 23ª victoria como profesional.
DECLARACIONES
Magnus Cort: “Es una de las carreras de etapa más grandes que tenemos, así que es genial. No teníamos un plan, pero me sentía bien por la mañana y decidí ir en la escapada. Y cuando estás en la fuga, el objetivo es estar en el final. Había muchos corredores fuertes en el grupo, así que tuvimos más oportunidades de llegar a la definición. Es increíble lo que el equipo está haciendo este año. Personalmente, es mi primera victoria de la temporada, por lo que la campaña va muy bien.
Michal Kwiatkowski: «Hemos sido actores de la carrera desde el comienzo y hoy tengo esta camiseta de líder porque hemos demostrado por qué vinimos aquí: para ganar la general de la París-Niza. En los primeros días, todo el equipo tuvo que trabajar duro. Era difícil estar en el frente todo el tiempo con los vientos de costado y las escisiones. Pero todos los compañeros están fuertes. Se necesita mucha motivación para hacerlo. Desde que tengo el jersey amarillo, ahora soy el líder de la equipo, pero Egan [Bernal] aún puede hacer grandes cosas. Hay etapas muy difíciles por delante este fin de semana. Para la contrarreloj de mañana, me mantendré concentrado, es un esfuerzo de 25 km y requiere mucha energía».
