Segunda entrega de lo que promete ser una trilogía. Si la primera crono de este Giro de Italia fue un aviso para navegantes, con un Primoz Rglic (Jumbo Visma) demostrando que su candidatura para hacerse con el rosa en Verona iba muy en serio, en esta segunda contrarreloj más larga y con final exigente, idónea para sus características, el esloveno vuelve a asestar un golpe de efecto para sus directos rivales cimentado en el primer bloque de la carrera una ventaja, si no decisiva, sí con aroma a máximo favorito faltando una crono final en la que puede sentenciar. Pero aun cuentan dos semanas duras por delante con toda la montaña y un mermado Jumbo Visma que tendrá que aferrarse al dulce momento que vive su líder para conquistar la corsa rosa.
Campenaerts, como estaba previsto, puso el techo en San Marino con un tiempo de 52:03 entonces imbatible. Y eso que el belga campeón de Europa y recordman de la hora perdió a la postre unos valiosos segundos cuando realizó el cambio de bicicleta de crono (se le salió la cala de su pedal y el mecánico no lo pudo ayudar) por una de ruta para afrontar la subida final de 13 kms.
Sentado en la silla caliente solo había que esperar para recoger lo cosechadon no presagiaba que Roglic ina a volver a quitarle el caramelo de la boca. Esperando a los favoritos como posibles amenazas sorprendía el neerlandés Bauke Mollema (Trek Segafredo), sacándose de sus piernas la mejor crono de su vida en un Giro y perdiendo tan solo 49″ con Campenaerts. Mollema (52.52) fue más rápido que sus competidores directos Vincenzo Nibali (52.57), en una clara línea regular que ya se pudo observar en San Luca, Bob Jungels (53.08), Pello Bilbao (53:35), Richard Carapaz (53.47), Ilnur Zakarin (53.48), Rafal Majka (53.56), Víctor de la Parte (54:12), Tao Geoghegan Hart (54.51), Mikel Landa (54.55), Simon Yates (55.03) y Miguel Ángel López (55:37).
No solo hubo gratas sorpresas. El colombiano Miguel Ángel López tuvo un pinchazo y terminó con un tiempo que casi le descarta de la lucha por la general. El líder de Astana cedió 3’45» en la etapa acumulando 4’29» con respecto al esloveno, que asegura su posición al menos dos días más (mañana es día de descanso). También los escaladores como Landa, a 4’52» y Simon Yates, algo menos, 3’46», se dejaron un valioso tiempo pero ahora en su terreno tendrán la obligación de moverse si quieren aspirar a más.
Los que pueden respirar por el momento: A 1’42» Pello Bilbao de Roglic en la general, Nibali se sitúa a 1’44», a 1’55» Mollema, a 2’53» Mjaka y a 3’16» Carapaz que se muestra como la gran baza de Movistar.
Declaraciones
Roglic. “Fue una contrarreloj larga y difícil. Llovió muy fuerte. Como resultado, tomé menos riesgos en las curvas, era bastante peligroso. En el ascenso aceleré y di todo el esfuerzo que me quedaba. Resultó ser suficiente para ganar la etapa, todo salió según lo planeado hoy y estoy feliz con esta victoria y con el tiempo que gané con mis competidores directos. Todavía faltan dos semanas para que el Giro termine en Verona y todavía pueden pasar muchas cosas, aunque prefiero estar delante Pero primero disfrutaré el día de descanso antes de trabajar mirando las etapas de montaña”.
Campenaerts. «El plan estar justo por debajo del umbral de máximo esfuerzo hasta la subida y luego allí por encima. Una estrategia similar a la que usé durante los campeonatos mundiales en Innsbruck. Como especialista en pruebas contra el crono es muy frustrante cuando tienes un problema mecánico. Al final, como habíamos acordado, el mecánico optó por la bicicleta de carretera en el que estábamos de acuerdo. El cambio no fue fluido y, debido a la adrenalina, me sentí un poco frustrado después de acabar. Entonces, pensé que todavía habría de cinco a diez corredores de la clasificación general que mejorarían mi tiempo, pero uno tras otro, no tuvieron éxito pero al final tuve sentimientos encontrados. Si hubiera ganado, el cambio de bicicleta habría sido inmediatamente olvidado. Si no, lo estaría maldiciendo y lamentablemente se convirtió en lo último. Al final perdí la contrarreloj por once segundos, así que sin ese error mecánico hubiera sido una victoria. Pero esas son las leyes duras del deporte de alto nivel y tengo que vivir con eso. No culpo a nadie. La última crono me viene aún mejor así que espero sobrevivir a las montañas sin demasiados problemas ni pérdidas de energía para luchar por la victoria en Verona».
Conti. “Según lo planeado no corrí ningún riesgo, especialmente con este clima increíblemente malo, hice toda la contrarreloj bajo una lluvia torrencial. Fue difícil por la escasa visibilidad, traté de mantenerme concentrado y empujar con fuerza en la subida. Mi objetivo era retener la magia rosa y lo logré. Hice esa promesa a mis compañeros de equipo por lo que pasaremos el día de descanso en rosa, lo cual es genial”.
