Los 145 kilómetros entre las monumentales Rávena y Módena sirvieron para que el francés Arnaud Démare inscribiera su apellido por primera vez en la historia del Giro de Italia con su victoria de etapa, superando al sprint al australiano Caleb Ewan y al campeón de Italia, Elia Viviani. Un alivio para el velocista galo del Groupama porque después de doce puestos entre los diez primeros y cuatro segundos puestos por fin pudo levantar sus brazos en este 2019. Un escenario tardío para un corredor de su especie pero magno para engordar su ficha que ya lleva 59 muescas, de las que dos son dos etapas en el Tour de Francia. Ya le queda picar en la Vuelta a España para entrar en el club de los ganadores parciales en las tres grandes vueltas.
Un sprint mediatizado por una caída superado el triángulo rojo del último kilómetros donde los más afectados fueron el campeón alemñan Pascal Ackermann y la promesa local Matteo Moschetti. Antes tuvieron que alcanzar a Fran Ventoso -biganador de etapa- que aprovechó su lanzamiento para el inédito Jakub Mareczko para tomar unos metros y tratar lo imposible como así fue. El accidente posterior redujo considerablemente el grupo de llegadores y a pesar de la mayoría del Lotto para Ewan, Démare aprovechó el carril contrario para sonreír en el podio posterior.
Una jornada totalmente plana que sirvió para el lucimiento deportivo y publicitario de otros dos equipos invitados personificados por el japonés Hatsuyama (Nippo) y el transalpino Covili (Bardiani) que fueron cazados a 27 kilómetros del final tras el que Valerio Conti recogió una nueva maglia rosa de líder. Y este miércoles todo apunta a más de lo mismo con otra etapa sin puertos y una de las últimas ocasiones para los artistas del piñón de once dientes.
