Los favoritos aprovecharon el día post Mortirolo para tantear sus fuerzas y medir energías antes de la etapa de transición de este jueves y antes de la traca final montañosa y la contrarreloj final de Verona. Y ahí Mikel Landa soltó otro de sus chispazos aunque con diferencias mínimas que le siguen dejando en la cuarta plaza con Roglic tercero y superior en la especialidad individual sobre el vasco. Por su parte, López y el cumpleañero rosado (26) Carapaz -rivales y amigos- dejaron en evidencia a Nibali y el esloveno en el kilómetro final que apenas cambia la clasificación, pero sí denota nimias diferencias físicas que deberán plasmarse en la jornada del viernes.
Mientras el francés Nans Peters aprovechó la numerosa fuga de la jornada -con la presencia de De la Parte, mejor español del día-, para estrenarse como corredor profesional y sumar así para el AG2R galo. A pesar del intento de Chaves, Conti y Neilands, el poderoso corredor de 25 años vivió su primer día de gloria que compensa para su equipo la baja de un desaparecido Gallopin.
Una fuga de 18 corredores con Formolo, Chaves, De Gendt, Masnada, Conti, el discreto Jungels o el también alavés De la Parte como elementos más destacables. Mientras Ineos -para proteger el top 10 de Sivakov– y Movistar se encargaron de mantener la escapada controlada, pero sin ganas reales de neutralizarla. Los protagonistas eran conocedores de la bula de Carapaz y sus colegas y a 15 kilómetros del final Peters tomó la decisión correcta con un seco ataque sin respuesta. Cuando quisieron reaccionar Conti, Chaves -primer puesto del año entre los diez mejores- y Neilands ya fue demasiado tarde, cuajando la alegría de un Peters desbocado.
Mientras el grupo de elegidos -con el nombre del sucesor de Ciccone ya decidido- se dedicaron a un asalto de boxeo, donde Landa intenta salvar su papel de secundario una vez más -repitiendo sus roles de Astana y Sky-, protagonizando un fuego artificial que apenas redujo diferencias y que quizás -viendo su golpe- haya perdido la ocasión de ganar la etapa, tarea en la que los españoles solo han firmado el éxito de Bilbao. Carapaz y López -con el español delante tras descolgar al creciente Carthy– tampoco dejaron la ocasión de humillar un poco a Roglic y un Nibali que dio algún síntoma de fatiga, pero que pudieron salvar ante la estrechez longitudinal de la ofensiva. Los rayos X esperan el viernes en la meta de San Martino di Castrozza. Paciencia.

Richard Carapaz: “Ha sido un buen día, tanto para Mikel como para mí. Teniendo en cuenta el esfuerzo de ayer, todo el frío que pasamos tanto nosotros como el resto de corredores… pienso que ha reaccionado bien el cuerpo y hemos podido seguir rascando más segunditos. Después del ataque de Mikel, he visto que saltaba López con unos metros y he aprovechado para seguirle, dejar atrás al resto de los rivales y conseguir esa pequeña ventaja que nos puede valer de mucho al final. Todavía queda bastante camino por recorrer, grandes montañas por delante esos dos días -viernes y sábado-, y vamos a intentar seguir buscando esos segunditos. ¿Celebración por mi cumple? Bueno, poco a poco (ríe), vamos a ver cómo lo celebramos”.
