Elia Viviani aprendió de su victoria en la 4ª etapa para aplicar su forma y remate en la siguiente engrosando las cifras del Deceuninck belga, ya con 39 primeras plazas en 2019, 6 del protagonista de hoy. Lanzado por Lampaert, Morkov y finalmente un gran campeón de Argentina, Max Richeze, su homónimo italiano afrontó primero la adoquinada y ligeramente empinada curva final a izquierdas para lannzar su potencia ante la que nada pudo hacer el aún líder Peter Sagan y el belga Jasper Stuyven. Iván García Cortina fue de nuevo el mejor español del día, aunque fuera de los diez primeros.
Fue el casi idéntico desenlace de una jornada que tuvo como protagonistas principales a Stefan Küng (Groupama), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain) y Fabien Grellier (Total) que siempre estuvieron en el punto de mira del Bora, Deceuninck y Trek, al final los primeros en la llegada. Sabedores de su imposible el campeón local Mohoric atacó a sus compañeros, pero su intento suicida terminó a 14 kilómetros del final donde nadie pudo moverse. Sí lo hizo el tren del Deceuninck para dar una nueva clase de cómo organizar y ejecutar una llegada masiva.
Por otra parte, la organización de la prueba ha comunicado que ha modificado el recorrido de la última etapa -nueva salida a las 13:10 horas locales- al suprimir la subida del Sustenpass, de más de 2.200 metros de altitud, al encontrarse cerrado. De esta forma la jkornada queda reducida a 105 kilómetros y 3.063 metros de desnivel tras superar los puertos de Nufenen, Gotthard y Furka.

Elia Viviani: «Siempre es bueno ganar una carrera y saborear la victoria por segundo día consecutivo. Los chicos hicieron un trabajo perfecto y debo decir que hacen mi vida mucho más fácil. Este éxito me alegra también porque confirma que estoy en buen camino hacia el Tour de Francia. Todos teníamos piernas cansadas, porque la etapa fue muy dura, y sabiendo que el final era cuesta arriba y con adoquines era una cuestión táctica. Le pedí a los compañeros que se movieran hacia la cabeza del grupo a solo 1.500 metros de meta. Después de que Max me dejó al frente cuando doblamos la última curva, todo lo que tuve que hacer fue lanzar mi sprint. Se acabaron las etapas planas, pero continuaré en carrera. Ayudaré lo más posible a Enric [Mas], que es nuestro corredor para la general y espero celebrar más resultados positivos con el equipo».
