Luka Mezgec (Mitchelton-Scott) se ha impuesto en la segunda etapa de la Vuelta a Eslovenia, de 146.3 kilómetros entre Maribor y Celje, y es el nuevo líder de la carrera. El ciclista local ha aprovechado la falta de acuerdo entre los favoritos y les ha rebasado en los metros finales desde un grupo perseguidor. Mezgec ha ganado sin oposición, Grega Bole (Bahrain Merida) ha sido segundo y Andrea Vendrame (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec), tercero, idénticas posiciones que en la nueva clasificación general.
Lorenzo Fortunato (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM), David Per (Adria Mobil) y Rok Korosec (Ljubljana Gusto Santic) han protagonizado la fuga del día y han llegado a contar con cinco minutos de ventaja. El trabajo de los UAE Team Emirates ha neutralizado la escapada en las primeras rampas de la subida a Svetina (5.4km al 7.7%), gran dificultad de la jornada y que se coronaba a unos 22 kilómetros de la llegada.
El ritmo de Diego Ulissi (UAE) ha roto el grupo cabecero en pedazos y solo cuatro ciclistas han conseguido seguirle, entre los que no se encontraba su compañero Tadec Pogacar, uno de los favoritos al triunfo final: Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott), Aleksandr Vlasov (Gazprom-RusVelo), Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy) y Giovanni Visconti (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM).
Chaves se descolgó en el peligroso descenso tras sufrir dos caídas, pero ha conseguido conectar en los últimos kilómetros de llano. Sus compañeros de escapada le han pedido el relevo, pero el colombiano no ha pasado consciente de que en el segundo grupo estaba Mezgec. Su empeño y el de los Androni y la falta de acuerdo entre los favoritos ha terminado con la victoria del esloveno, que ha cazado al grupo cabecero a unos 500 metros de la meta.
