Giacomo Nizzolo (Dimension Data) se ha impuesto en la quinta y última etapa de la Vuelta a Eslovenia, de 167.5 kilómetros entre las localidades de Trebnje y Novo Mesto. El Italiano ha sido el más rápido en un sprint de unas 20 unidades, mientras que Diego Ulissi (UAE Emirates) se ha proclamado ganador de la carrera seguido por Giovanni Visconti (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM) y Aleksandr Vlasov (Gazprom-RusVelo), integrantes del podio final.
Przemyslaw Kasperkiewicz (Delko Marseille Provence), Charles Planet (Novo Nordisk) y Ziga Horvat (Adria Mobil) han protagonizado la fuga del día, aunque no han superado los cuatro minutos de ventaja ante el interés de los equipos de los velocistas. La subida de Brezje (8km al 4.1%) ha provocado un acelerón en el pelotón y algunos movimientos que han tirado abajo la fuga y diseñado una nueva escapada.
Domen Novak (Bahrain Merida), Umberto Marengo (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM), Gasper Katrasnik (Adria Mobil) y Benjamin Hill (Ljubljana Gusto Santic) han formado un nuevo cuarteto en cabeza, pero tampoco han llegado demasiado lejos. Y es que el alto ritmo del Gazprom RusVelo en la última dificultad del día, Vanta, ha tumbado el intento y reducido el grupo de cabeza hasta unas 20 unidades.
Los Mitchelton-Scott y Rubén Plaza (Israel Cycling Academy) han liderado el descenso y los últimos kilómetros camino de Novo Mesto pensando en sus hombres rápidos, Luka Mezgec y Davide Cimolai. Ni uno ni otro han conseguido hacer bueno el trabajo de sus compañeros en el sprint final. Nizzolo ha sido el más listo, por colocación, y rápido, con un potente esfuerzo de 300 metros, en la recta final, de carretera estrecha, pavimento adoquinado y en ligera cuesta arriba. El italiano se ha impuesto al propio Mezgec, segundo, y a Shane Archbold (BORA-Hansgrohe).
Se trata de la 20ª victoria como profesional para Nizzolo, la segunda de la temporada tras la sexta etapa en el Tour de Omán y solo el quinto triunfo para el Dimension Data en 2019. Por su parte, Ulissi ha subido a lo más alto del podio en la clasificación general por segunda vez en su carrera después de ganar la Vuelta a Eslovenia en 2011.

Me gustaría agradecer a todo el equipo, corrimos muy inteligentes en las cinco etapas: con el talento de Pogačar y Polanc, la fuerza inagotable de Rui Oliveira y Consonni y la experiencia de Marcato hicieron que todo fuera mucho más fácil. Incluso hoy reaccionamos perfectamente cuando Gazprom intentó tomar el control en la ascensión. Mi próximo objetivo serán los campeonatos italianos».
