Umberto Marengo (Neri Sottoli-Selle Italia-KTM) estrenó su casillero de victorias como profesional en la primera etapa de la Vuelta a Utah, de 139 kilómetros con salida y llegada en North Logan City. El italiano de 27 años fue el más rápido de entre los seis ciclistas que burlaron la vigilancia del pelotón en los últimos kilómetros y se impuso en un sprint reducido por delante de Lawson Craddock (Education First), segundo y nuevo líder de la clasificación general, y Edwin Ávila (Israel), tercero.
El mejor español fue Juanpe López (42º a 21 segundos del ganador), que debutaba como stagiaire con los colores del Trek-Segafredo y se dejó ver en la parte cabecera del pelotón durante la última vuelta del circuito final. Bernat Font (303Project), el otro español en carrera, lo intentó en el penúltimo giro con un ataque acompañado de Lorenzo Fortunato (Neri Sottoli) y Thomas Revard (Hagens Berman Axeon), pero el gran grupo les dio caza en la definitiva subida, justo cuando por detrás intentaba conectar el maillot amarillo, James Piccoli (Elevate), afectado por un pinchazo y que protagonizó una interesante persecución apoyado por su equipo hasta reintegrarse con la cabeza.
Endurecieron los Trek-Segafredo con un ritmo de control para su hombre rápido, Kiel Reijnen, pero Craddock sorprendió con un movimiento en el tramo llano camino de meta y se llevo consigo a Sebastian Schönberger (Neri Sottoli). Reaccionaron Marengo, Griffin Easter (303Project), Joao Almeida (Hagens Berman Axeon) y, finalmente, Ávila. Lo intentó en solitario Schönberger, pero le superaron sus compañeros de aventura, el primero su compañero Marengo. Jugada ganadora del Neri Sottoli, que suma siete victorias en 2019.
