Elia Viviani no quiso ser menos que su hermano Attilio en Bélgica y ganó la 24ª edición de la Cyclassics Hamburgo, prueba del UCI World Tour redondeando un formidable día familiar de dos corredores que compatirán el Cofidis en 2020. El vigente campeón de Europa –10ª victoria del año y 77ª total– estrenó su nueva casaca venciendo por tercer año consecutivo en la septentrional ciudad alemana superando a al australiano Caleb Ewan (Lotto) y al también transalpino Giacomo Nizzolo (Dimension Data). El sub-26 Jaime Castrillo (Movistar) fue el mejor español en la 23ª plaza.
Gijs Van Hoecke (CCC), José Gonçalves (Katusha), Alex Frame (Trek) e Igor Boev (Gazprom) se despertaron animados y alcanzaron rápidamente una ventaja de diez minutos. En el primero de los cuatro pasos por el Waseberg, Frame se descolgó y fue el Bora de Sagan -que atacó en la segunda cota- y el posteriormente cansado Ackermann el que echó abajo la fuga a falta de la ascensión final. Ahí pasaron a la acción Davide Villella (Astana) y el Jumbo, antes de que Sagan insistiera y neutralizado por el propio Viviani. Arnaud Démare (Groupama) lanzó el sprint, pero una vez más Morkov lanzó de manera impecable al campeón olímpico de omnium para lucir su nueva maglia estrellada.
