Bauke Mollema (Trek Segafredo) sigue de dulce. Una semana después de conquistar Il Lombardia, el primer Monumento de su extensa trayectoria, ha logrado la victoria en la 28ª Copa de Japón (1.HC). El neerlandés se ha impuesto en el ya conocido circuito de Utsuonomiya sobre un total de 144.2 kilómetros. Michael Woods (Education First), segundo, y Dion Smith (Mitchelton-Scott), tercero, han completado el podio, mientras que Francisco Mancebo (Matrix Powertag) ha cruzado la línea de meta en la cuarta posición como mejor español.
Mollema, que ya ganó la prueba japonesa en 2015, sucede en el palmarés al australiano Robert Power y se sitúa justo detrás de los dos ciclistas más laureados en el historial: Claudio Chiappucci (1993-95) y Sergio Barbero (1999-2002-03) , que suman tres victorias cada uno. Se trata del segundo triunfo del neerlandés esta temporada tras el ya mencionado en Il Lombardia, además de colgarse la medalla de oro en los Europeos y los Mundiales en la prueba del relevo mixto.
Mollema ha completado un tramo excepcional tramo final de temporada: 5º en la Clásica de San Sebastián, 14º en el GP de Québec, 10º en el GP de Montréal, 4º en el Giro dell’Emilia, 5º en el GP Brugno Beghelli, 7º en la Milán-Turín y ganador en Il Lombardia y Japan Cup. El neerlandés de 32 años suma ya 14 triunfos como profesional y le da la victoria nº 11 al Trek-Segafredo en 2019.
