Jai Hindley se confirma como otro de los talentos jóvenes que está asolando el pelotón 2020. Tras Evenepoel en Argentina, Brunel en Bessègges o Pogačar en Comunitat Valenciana, el australiano de 23 años sentenció el Sun Tour (2.1) a lo campeón, ganando la etapa reina vestido de amarillo, sin regalos de ningún tipo como es su obligación. Los 15 kilómetros del ascenso final al Monte Buller fue un duelo final con su compatriota Sebastian Berwick (St George), otro imberbe de 20 años en su segundo año profesional. Hindley manda ahor con 10 y 36 segundos de margen sobre Berwick y Howson, respectivamente antes de la etapa final sobre un circuito en Melbourne. Será su segunda victoria en una prueba por etapas tras el Tour de Fuzhou en 2017.
James Piccoli (Israel) fue el primer atacante a 3 kilómetros del final. El canadiense tuvo opciones de victoria con 10 segundos de ventaja sobre Simon Yates y Dion Smith, ambos del Mitchelton, y 20 segundos sobre el grupo de Hindley. El ataque de Berwick fue determinante porque remachó a los de delante, pero se llevó a su verdugo Hindley hasta el final. Marcos García, 9º, fue el mejor de los dos españoles presentes junto a Salvador Guardiola.
