Robin Carpenter, como en el Giro o la Vuelta pasados, demostró que a veces vale la pena intentar colarrse en una escapada y tentar al futuro. El estadounidense del Rally primero se insertó en el corte bueno junto a Bjergfelt, Mazzone, Scott y Sessler -Jon Etxebarria se quedó de puente estéril- y después aprovechó la dureza del tramo final para dejar primero al exBurgos Sessler y después a Scott. Su ventaja adquirida fue suficiente para llegar a meta con 33 segundos, ganar la etapa y vestirse de líder sucediendo al campeón belga Wout Van Aert que no puso interés en neutralizar la escapada.
