Jonathan Milan sigue aliviando su relativo fracaso con Italia al no lograr el oro en la persecución por equipos en los pasados Juegos Olímpicos de París con victorias en su regreso a la carretera. El italiano del Lidl estadounidense encadenó su segunda victoria consecutiva en el Tour de Alemania un día después de vencer en el prólogo contrarreloj. En este caso lo hizo en su otra especialidad, el sprint, superando a Jordi Meeus (Red Bull) y el local Max Kanter (Astana) con Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar), 15º y mejor español.
Mediada la etapa lograron fugarse Anton Lennemann (Bike Aid), Nick Bangert, Mauro Brenner y Ben Felix Jochum (Lotto Kern). Brenner cedió y el trío logró dos minutos de ventaja máxima bajo el control trasero del Lidl. Bangert aprovechó las cotas finales para irse solo pero su aventura acabó a 15 kilómetros del final.
Visma primero y después Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain) seleccionaron el grupo que se quedó con tres destacados: Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X), Thomas Gloag (Visma) y Archie Ryan (EF Education). El propio líder Jonathan Milan (Lidl) trató de minimizar la ventaja hasta que un grupo de 40 unidades cazó al grupo a 6.000 metros de meta. Ineos, Red Bull, DSM y Alpecin lanzaron sus trenes, pero Lidl, con Alex Kirsch y Mads Pedersen, propulsaron la segunda victoria del transalpino.
2ª: Viernes 23 agosto: Heilbronn (12:45)-Schwäbisch Gmünd (16:50), 173 kms

DECLARACIONES
Jonathan Milan (Lidl): «Creo que deberíamos empezar por el principio. Como siempre, hemos hecho un gran trabajo de equipo para llegar así a la meta. Tengo que dar las gracias a todo el equipo, no sólo por los últimos 15 km. Amanuel ha hecho una carrera impresionante. Ha controlado muy bien la carrera durante 145 km, gracias a él. No me sorprende, está acostumbrado a hacer estas cosas, ha controlado toda la carrera él solo. Estoy muy contento de que el equipo haya dado el 100% al final de la carrera, que ha sido bastante complicada, con algunos ataques. Ha sido difícil superar esta subida, mantenerme en el primer grupo, pero lo he conseguido bien con Daan, Alex y Toms, y al final con Mads. Ha sido una victoria muy, muy especial para nosotros. Sabíamos que teníamos que afrontar la última subida en cabeza y que alguien intentaría [atacar]. Ha sido muy duro. Me gustaría llegar a ser [el mejor velocista del mundo] algún día. Sé que puedo esforzarme al máximo y conseguir buenos resultados, pero sabemos que hay algunos corredores muy fuertes, como Mads. Vayamos día a día. Las piernas están bastante bien en estas subidas, ya veremos. Aún nos quedan algunos días, todavía hay un poco de presión. Es una carrera muy especial para nosotros y daremos lo mejor de nosotros en las próximas etapas, y también nos divertiremos. Hoy he visto que Mads ha estado muy bien, respondiendo a los ataques en la subida. Mañana ya veremos, me encantaría echar una mano a Mads para ayudarle».
