Gavin Mannion (UHC) ha registrado el mejor tiempo en la crono del segundo parcial del Colorado Classic para colocarse además como nuevo líder de la prueba norteamericana. Serghei Tvetcov finalizó segundo, completando el doblete del UnitedHealthcare. Hugh Carthy (EF Education First-Drapac) fue tercero.
La victoria de Mannion fue exactamente lo que su equipo necesitaba después de no poder acercarse al vencedor de la primera etapa Gage Hecht (Aevolo) en una actuación sorprendente, conformándose con el segundo de su velocista Travis McCabe. Además, con la búsqueda continua para que el equipo encuentre un nuevo patrocinador del título para 2019 parece que las victorias puedan avivar el interés.
Mannion recorrió el ascenso final de la crono individual al Vail Pass de 15,88 km en 25:41. Tvetcov, quien fue segundo en la general en la carrera del año pasado, fue 11 segundos más lento. Carthy fue 21 segundos atrás. El último en ponerse en escena, el líder Hecht, logró un sólido resultado para situarse 17º, pero terminando con un retraso de 1.12, cediendo la ventaja en la general a Mannion.
El estadounidense de 26 años del UHC ahora tendrá que defender su ventaja en la etapa de reina del sábado, de 161.9km comenzando y terminando en Denver con tres ascensos aunque la última dificultad lejos de meta.
