Sonny Colbrelli ha sido el claro vencedor de la 99ª Coppa Bernocchi, clásica italiana 1.1 UCI, después de ser el más rápido en el sprint masivo en la meta de Legnano después de neutralizar a 700 metros de la meta al austriaco Patrick Gamper, el mejor de los tres escapados del día junto a Ganna y Chokri que llegaron a tener casi 8 minutos de renta. Guillaume Boivin (Israel) y Sacha Modolo (UAE) acompañaron en el podio al excorredor del Bardiani. El catalán Edu Prades (Caja Rural) –sin contrato para 2018- fue el mejor de los doce españoles en la novena plaza.
El italiano del Bahrain -con Ion Ander Insausti de compañero- tenía ganas de reivindicarse después de -como él mismo dijo en la llegada- recibir algunas críticas por su falta de resultados, a pesar de haber ganado una etapa en París-Niza y la Flecha de Brabante, pero ya en abril. Pero ayudado en los metros finales por Bonifazio, le dio una bofetada a la selección italiana lanzada por Bennati para Viviani para hacer valer su figura de cara al Mundial de Bergen, donde Davide Cassani lo tendrá complicado para trazar la estrategia en la prueba noruega. Colbrelli le da una baza más.
Antes Nippo e Italia se encargaron de echar abajo la fuga. Primero cayó el marroquí Chokri y después el italiano y excampeón del mundo de persecución, Filippo Ganna. Gamper -exlíder del Tour del Porvenir- no se rindió y aguantó bajo la lluvia hasta la recta final donde vio como a poco más de 500 metros su esfuerzo quedaba en nada, pero demostrando su forma para los dos Mundiales sub-23.
