Primera victoria del año para el gaditano Juan José Lobato (Nippo – Vini Fantini) en solitario en el repecho final de la Coppa Sabatini, en la localidad de Peccioli (201kms), tras anticiparse al movimiento de lanzamiento del Bahrain Merida para Sonny Colbrelli que vio impotente como Lobato se anticipó a la volata. Un ataque seco en la pendiente con dirección a meta, tras un giro de izquierda pronunciado, le permitió reivindicarse en la llegada tras la recuperación de un año lastrado por una lesión. Su última victoria databa del 9 de agosto de 2017 en Trevoux, Tour de l’Ain. Segundo fue el propio Sonny Colbrelli y tercero Gianni Moscon (Team Sky), vencedores esta misma semana de la Coppa Bernocchi y el Giro della Toscana, respectivamente.
La gran satisfacción de Lobato en la línea de llegada, para él y para el equipo: «Estoy muy feliz por la victoria que llega al final de un año difícil para mí. Mi temporada comenzó tarde por tener que recuperar de una caída que produjo una fractura de clavícula. Ahora estoy bien y tengo que agradecer a NIPPO Vini Fantini por darme la confianza y estoy feliz de conseguir de nuevo esta gran victoria en Italia, donde para el equipo es tan importante, contra oponentes excelentes».
La nota no tan positiva fue el nuevo abandono de Mikel Landa (Movistar Team) tras el producido en el Giro della Toscana que debía determinar su participación en el próximo Mundial de Innsbruck. El alavés no ha podido mejorar de la dura lesión producida durante la clásica de San Sebastián.
