Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) ha revalidado su triunfo de 2017 en la Cyclassics Hamburgo 2018. El italiano ha superado a Arnaud Démare -nuevamente segundo- y Alexander Kristoff para cosechar su decimoquinta victoria de la temporada. La fuga del día, protagonizada por cinco hombres los que se encontraba Iván García Cortina (Bahrain), fue abortada a 18 kilómetros de meta. La llegada estuvo marcada por una caída a falta de dos kilómetros en la que se vio implicado Pascal Ackermann, una de las bazas de Bora junto a Peter Sagan, que sólo fue décimo.
Esa fuga del día –Winner Anacona (Movistar), Iván García Cortina (Bahrain), Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Kamil Gradek (CCC) y Evgeny Shalunov (Gazprom)– intentó sorprender, sabedora de que tenía muy pocas opciones de prosperar dada la tradición de sprints de la prueba hamburguesa. Tras ser absorbido el quinteto, ante el último de los pasos por Waseberg, un primer ataque de tres corredores y un segundo de siete que poco después se unió a ellos formó un grupo en cabeza integrado por hombres como Teuns y Roelandts (BMC), Benoot (Lotto), Van Poppel (LottoNL-Jumbo), Kristoff (UAE), Bakelants (Ag2r), Impey (Mitchelton), Colbrelli (Bahrain) o Tratnik (CCC).
Pero Quick-Step no estaba dispuesto a permitir que el sprint se fuera al limbo y trabajó para dar caza a los fugados. Lo intentó Lutsenko (Astana), pero a falta de 5 kilómetros estaba claro que la llegada masiva era un hecho. La caída de Ackermann alteró los planes de Bora, puesto que Sagan no está todavía en su punto tras su caída en el Tour -punto que buscará en la inminente Vuelta a España-. Y Viviani, una vez más, remató a la perfección el trabajo del ‘Wolfpack’.
