Alexander Kristoff (UAE Emirates) ha sumado su cuarto triunfo consecutivo en el GP Frankfurt. El noruego, que venció en 2014, 2016 y 2017 -no hubo prueba en 2015 por amenaza terrorista- se ha impuesto ante Michael Matthews (Sunweb) y Oliver Naesen (Ag2r) en la que es la tercera victoria del equipo asiático, todas cosechadas por Kristoff. Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step), uno de los grandes favoritos en la llegada masiva, calculó mal y no pudo disputar la llegada.
Floris Gerts (Roompot), Daniel Teklehaimanot (Cofidis), Antoine Warnier (WB Aqua Protect), Aaron Gate (Aqua Blue), Yukiya Arashiro (Bahrain-Merida), David Tanner (Veranda’s Willems) y Aleksejs Saramotins (Bora-Hansgrohe) protagonizaron la fuga destacada en la primera parte de la carrera. Al paso por Billtahlhöhe brotaron del pelotón Bjorg Lambrecht (Lotto-Soudal), Michael Gogl (Trek) y Mühlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) para llegar hasta la fuga y aguantar en cabeza tras la subida. Detrás, Arashiro, único superviviente de la fuga, recibió nueva compañía: Laurens De Plus (Quick-Step), Julien Bernard (Trek), Emanuel Buchmann (Bora), Simon Spilak y Nils Politt (Katusha), además de su compañero Grega Bole.
Quedaba el último paso por Mammolshein Kronberg, donde cedieron Arashiro y Politt. En el grupo principal, Michael Matthews dio un paso al frente para intener reconducir la situación. Se llevó a su rueda a otros cuatro hombres –Tratnik (CCC), Kudus (Dimension Data), Weening (Roompot) y Canola (Nippo)-, además de recoger a Politt. A 30 para meta, la diferencia entre la cabeza, donde De Plus ganduleaba y se dejaba llevar, y el pelotón superaba el minuto. El grupo de Matthews no recortaba y terminó siendo cazado.
Lo que parecía una fuga consolidada quedó en nada tras la puesta en marcha de la maquinaria Quick-Step, más limitada en efectivos que de costumbre pero decidida a preparar una llegada masiva para Gaviria. Wanty también trabajaba para Pasqualon. Con casi 20 kilómetros de recorrido urbano final mucho tenían los fugados que bregar. Resistieron Bernard, Bole, Buchman y Spilak cuando restaban ocho para el final, y a tres se acabó la historia con el patrocinio de Yves Lampaert. Gaviria, ya sin lanzadores -el grupo principal era sólo de 25 unidades-, salió en primera persona al ataque de Sean de Bie (Verandas Willems), pensando que ya era la recta de meta. Se encontró con una curva a izquierda y se quedó sin respuesta. Fuera de concurso el colombiano, Kristoff no faltó a su cita con la victoria, pese a la remontada final de Matthews.
