Andrii Ponomar le dio a Ucrania el primer éxito internacional en la categoría junior colgándose el oro durante el Campeonato Europeo que se celebró en Alkmaar, Países Bajos. Ponomar pudo celebrar en solitario la victoria tras decidir a su favor, con solo un solo ataque ganador, la carrera entre un grupo selecto de rivales. Gleb Karpenko, Lars Van Ryckeghem y el propio Andrii Ponomar pudieron distanciarse en los último tres giros al circuito neerlandés pero el control de la carrera estaba por detrás. En la última vuelta, el pelotón agarró al grupo de cabeza y esa fue la señal para que Ponomar saltara.
El ucraniano agarró quince segundos que bastaron para llegar solo a meta debido en gran parte al mal entendimiento en la persecución. Los neerlandeses Leijnse y Maurice Ballerstedt atacaron demasiado tarde y no pudieron impedir la primera victoria de un ucranio en la categoría. En el sprint de los perseguidores el alemán Maurice Ballerstedt terminó en segundo lugar, por delante del italiano Andrea Piccolo. Ponomar es el sucesor de Remco Evenepoel en la lista de honor de los juniors.

Pluimers se proclama campeona de Europa junior
La neerlandesa Ilse Pluimers se encumbró en el Campeonato Europeo celebrado en Alkmaar a los 17 años de edad certificando el dominio de los Países Bajos. Su compatriota Sofie van Rooijen se unió al podio haciendo doblete para las oranje. El podio lo completaría la francesa Kristina Nenadovic haciéndose con el bronce.
69 kilómetros de circuito que hicieron valer las corredoras de casa. El recorrido ya era bastante técnico, pero se volvió aún más peligroso debido a las fuertes lluvias causa de que varias participantes se estrellaran. La selección naranja tenía no menos de cinco corredores en el grupo delantero, por lo que jugó su superioridad para ganar con solvencia. A unos quince kilómetros de la línea de meta se destacó Pluimers y nada pudieron hacer el resto de aspirantes ante el control de sus compañeras.
