El Campeonato de Europa de carretera en Alkmaar ha puesto el punto y final con la victoria de Elia Viviani en la prueba reina, de 172.5km con salida y llegada en la localidad holandesa. El italiano ha rematado el trabajo de su equipo y se ha impuesto en un sprint a dos por delante de su compañero en el Deceuninck-Quick Step, el belga Yves Lampaert, que se ha colgado la medalla de plata. El alemán Pascal Ackermann, que se ha filtrado en el decisivo corte de tres, no ha aguantado el ritmo y se ha tenido que conformar con el bronce.
El tramo inicial, de 46km hasta la entrada en el circuito urbano, ha estado marcado por el fuerte viento y que ha roto el pelotón en pedazos. El reagrupamiento de unos 60 hombres en el trazado final parecía abocar la carrera a una llegada masiva. No se ha conformado la selección italiana, que ha vuelto a romper el gran grupo con un brutal cambio de ritmo de Matteo Trentin que ha dejado solo 13 ciclistas en cabeza.
Sin la necesidad de realizar un ataque, Viviani, Lampaert y Ackermann se han marchado en solitario cuando restaban unos 25 kilómetros para el final en un tramo muy revirado. El acuerdo ha sido total en el trío de cabeza y enseguida han alcanzado medio minuto de ventaja, suficiente para jugarse la victoria. Lampaert ha intentado marcharse en solitario a dos kilómetros de la llegada y solo le ha seguido Viviani, que se ha impuesto con facilidad en la llegada.
Es la novena victoria del año para el velocista nacido hace 30 años en Isola della Scala, que ya levantó los brazos hace una semana en la RideLondon-Surrey Classic y el mes de julio en la 4ª etapa del Tour de Francia, cerrando el círculo de triunfos en las tres grandes. Tras dos exitosas temporadas en el Deceuninck-Quick Step, el nuevo campeón europeo se ha comprometido con el Cofidis para la próxima campaña.
