Y, por fin, a la cuarta fue la vencida y Jay McCarthy (Bora-Hangrohe) se ha alzado como el primer ganador australiano de la Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race, primer clásica World Tour de la temporada, después de ser el más rápido en el sprint final de una carrera que, por otra parte, poco tuvo de emoción hasta esos metros finales en los que el aussie supo imponer su punta de velocidad ante Elia Viviani (Quick Step Floors) y Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott), que sigue en plena forma después de imponerse en el Tour Down Under de la pasada semana.
La prueba estuvo marcada por la fuga del holandés Robert De Greef (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Alexander Porter (KordaMentha Real Estate), Samuel Welsford (KordaMentha Real Estate), Lasse Norman Hansen (Aqua Blue Sport) y Pavel Kochetkov (Katusha-Alpecin), que llegó a contar con una ventaja máxima de casi 6 minutos que, sin embargo, nunca fueron un problema para un pelotón que había decidido, incluso antes de la salida, que la de hoy sería una jornada que se decidiría al sprint.
Mitchelton-Scott fue el equipo que se encargó de llevar el peso del pelotón hasta que a falta de 15 kilómetros para la línea de meta dieron caza a Kotchetkov, Porter y Hansen, únicos supervivientes de la fuga. Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott), Simon Gerrans (BMC), Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) o Jay McCarthy fueron algunos de los protagonistas de una fuga de nueve hombres que se formó ya en el tramo final de la prueba, un corte que fue el bueno para que el australiano de Bora-Hangrohe acabara llevándose el triunfo cuando el pelotón ya se les echaba encima.
