Elia Viviani se quedó sin nada después de ser el primero en meta, lucir su novedosa maglia tricolor de campeón de Italia, dar entrevistas tras la tercera, larga y tediosa jornada del Giro de Italia, pero el jurado técnico visionó las imágenes -hay vídeo arbitraje (VAR)- y fue desclasificado por un movimiento irregular ante Moschetti. Por tanto el colombiano Fernando Gaviria se adjudicó la etapa ante el francés Arnaud Démare.
Son las cosas que suelen pasar en el bullicioso mundo de los velocistas y más cuando el premio es de la enjundia de toda una etapa en una gran vuelta. Las piernas suelen estar frescas en las terceras jornadas y la tensión se maximiza en los kilómetros finales. El italiano del Deceuninck se equivocó cuando quizás no tenía necesidad y sintió la angosta presencia de su joven compatriota Moschetti -exFundación Contador- cambiando bruscamente su trayectoria. Una acción que le penaliza y le da al pupilo de Matxin su estreno en la corsa rosa. Dos especialistas dorados en el omnium (dos arcoíris del americano y un oro olímpico el europeo) que perpetúan su rivalida sobre el asfalto.
Una etapa maratón marcada por el viento y que solo el kamikaze japonés Sho Hatsuyama intentó escribir el guion habitual en estas primeras jornadas. Una manera quizás de suturar el ridículo de su equipo y de su compañero y compatriota Hiroki Nishimura que no fue capaz de entrar en el control de la primera etapa contrarreloj asolada por Roglic. El honor del corredor y del grupo ítalo-nipón -donde participa Juanjo Lobato– estaba en entredicho y nada mejor que un escaparate de la magnitud del Giro para al menos dejarse ver y protagonizar una de las campañas publicitarias más largas del año. Quizás buscaba compañía pero nadie aceptó la invitación de modo que una vez enharinado no hubo marcha atrás. Siete minutos de renta máxima y casi 150 kilómetros de excursión solitaria que finiquitaron los intereses por los puntos en los sprints intermedios.
Los nervios y las averías trastocaron al Movistar y al ecuatoriano Richard Carapaz -46 segundos de pérdida en meta- que hubo de montarse en la bicicleta de un compañero -mucho más grande- con el consiguiente sobreesfuerzo como el que hicieron los conjuntos con velocistas. Bora colocó bien a Ackermann, pero el campeón alemán embutido de morado no estuvo fino. Sí pareció estarlo Viviani, pero el alcohol del podio lo regó Gaviria. Siempre ser segundo puede tener su reválida.
DECLARACIONES
Fernando Gaviria: «Así no es realmente como quería ganar y por eso no lo celebré en el podio. En mi opinión, Viviani es el ganador de hoy. No creo que lo haya hecho a propósito, salió directamente de la línea por el deslizamiento de Ackermann. Esta es la primera vez que «gano» debido a la regla de la desclasificación, pero supongo que estas cosas suceden, especialmente en los sprints masivos. Independientemente del resultado, mi equipo hizo un gran trabajo y espero recompensarlos con una clara victoria lo antes posible».
Richard Carapaz: “Desde el inicio fue una etapa nerviosa, pero uno nunca espera incidentes así. He pasado por encima de un bache, he dañado una rueda y he tenido que cambiar bici con Pedrero. Yo soy pequeño y mis compañeros son más altos (ríe), así que iba pedaleando como podía. Luego nos ha pillado la caída y ya ha sido imposible remontar. Hoy nos ha tocado a nosotros y hemos perdido unos segundos, pero no descartamos todavía nada. Seguimos optimistas y en pie de lucha, que el Giro todavía es largo. Los compañeros han tratado de solucionar el problema lo más pronto posible, y les estoy muy agradecido porque el apoyo ha estado fenomenal. Tenemos muchas etapas aún por delante; ya vendrán los días buenos”.
