Cara y cruz para el Movistar en el Giro. Si la gran alegría del único equipo español participante la dio la victoria de etapa del ecuatoriano Richard Carapaz –segunda consecutiva tras la del año pasado– atacando en el kilómetro final y aguantando el envite final del supersónico Ewan, la decepción vino por parte de Mikel Landa que cedió 43 segundos ante Primoz Roglic, el líder que supo estar atento y colarse en el grupo destacado de 8 corredores que salvó la segunda de las caídas en el epílogo.
Peor le fue al holandés Tom Dumoulin -con la rodilla ensangrentada y sin fracturas– que entró en meta con más de 4 minutos perdidos con el esloveno del Jumbo, lo que le elimina prácticamente del podio de Verona si finalmente continúa en liza. Este miércoles decidirá si continúa o ya se centra en el Tour de Francia y -quién sabe- la Vuelta a España.
Una nueva jornada maratoniana superior a los 200 kilómetros (235) donde las caídas -el eterno debate de la reducción de corredores- en el tramo final destrozaron las opciones de muchos elegidos y premiaron el oportunismo de los más listos y avezados como Carapaz y Roglic, los principales beneficiados y visitantes del podio de Frascati.
Antes los locales Mirco Maestri (Bardiani), Damiano Cima (Nippo) y Marco Frapporti (Androni) cumplieron su papel protagonista de tres equipos que tienen escasas opciones de ganar etapas y nulas en la general. Se fueron a las primeras de cambio y rodaron juntos dos cientos de kilómetros hasta que Maestri y Frapporti abandonaron la compañía de Cima, a 20 kilómetros del final. Un movimiento agónico porque a menos de 10 kilómetros el pelotón volvió a su formato para iniciar el caos.
Y de las montonera salieron ilesos Richard Carapaz -Movistar hizo su trabajo llevando a sus líderes adelante-, el líder Primoz Roglic, Ulissi, Marcato, Conti, Sénéchal, Ewan y Ackermann. También Viviani inicialmente, pero el campeón italiano defenestrado la víspera fue incapaz de seguir el ritmo.
Y cuando parecía que Ewan o Roglic iban a sumar una muesca más en su palmarés, Carapaz -en forma tras repetir en Asturias- soltó su andana letal en el momento justo y perfecto para crear dudas entre sus perseguidores. Y esos momentos fueron los clave para que el sudamericano exLizarte levantara sus brazos por centímetro ante el lanzado Ewan que sin duda perdió una formidable ocasión.
Un día también negativo para el UAE Emirates de Gianetti y Matxin que salió con un corredor menos por el presunto dopaje del colombiano Juan Sebastián Molano. Dani Navarro (Katusha), por su parte, se convierte en el primer abandono español de la prueba.

Richard Carapaz: “¡Emocionadísimo! Qué alegría tan grande. Hoy he salido con otra mentalidad. Ayer fue un día de mucha mala suerte y hoy quería empezar de nuevo, de cero. Y así ha sido hoy. Sabíamos que siendo un día tan largo, con muchos repechos, el terreno nos iba un poco mejor, pero para nada esperaba una victoria como la de hoy. La idea desde el equipo era solo intentar llegar con los más fuertes, que los compañeros cuidasen mucho de Mikel y de mí. Lamentablemente, esa caída por delante ha partido el pelotón, Mikel y varios compañeros se han visto también involucrados y el equipo me ha transmitido que tratara de llegar ahí y si podía, intentarlo. Sabía que venían varios hombres rápidos en ese grupo, pero he buscado mi oportunidad, a 600 metros he visto que podía lanzarme y aguantar, he arrancado con todo y he visto que tenía una buena distancia, aunque ha habido que apretar hasta el final porque venía Ewan con todo. Es un día muy emocionante, más después de lo que vivimos ayer y de todo el esfuerzo que he hecho en los últimos meses para llegar bien aquí. Mi agradecimiento y dedicatoria va para todas las personas que nos siguen y nos mandan sus mensajes de aliento; a mi familia querida y, siempre, al equipo y a mi país”.
