Caleb Ewan ha empatado con Pascal Ackermann y Primoz Roglic como biganadores de etapa en este Giro de Italia aprovechando así una de las últimas ocasiones para los llegadores tras los 221 largos kilómetros entre las localidades de Carpi y Novi Ligure. El australiano del Lotto cogió perfectamente la vehemente estela del campeón alemán para lanzar su habitual potencia sin que el ganador de la víspera, Arnaud Démare, y el lacerado corredor del Bora pudieran hacer nada por impedir la 34ª victoria profesional de un Ewan cada vez más maduro y acoplado al equipo belga. Juanjo Lobato se metió en la llegada quedándose a una plaza del top 10.
Un día -otro más- para el debate de si estas planas y maratonianas etapas son necesarias en una prueba como la gran ronda italiana. Es parte del recorrido, de la orografía de la península -la alta montaña reside en el norte- y esos perfiles tediosos para muchos son aptos para aventureros, equipos de segunda fila y velocistas, que también tienen derecho a su lucimiento cuando no pueden en terrrenos cronometrados y/o montañosos. Un menú siempre servido en la historia de este deporte e incluido en la carta de las grandes vueltas, compuestas ahora por 21 etapas y dos días de descanso. Fracciones que van acumulando desgaste, fatiga, pérdida de potencia y que siempre dejan al más resistente, al mejor, en lo alto del podio. La esencia de estas pruebas y la razón de porqué son las más deseadas por todos.
Y si así fuera corredores como Marco Frapporti (Androni), Mirco Maestri (Bardiani) y Damiano Cima (Nippo) y sus equipos invitados por los organizadores quizás no existirían. Pero como llevan dorsal esperan este tipo de etapas para probar y soñar como lo ha hecho Masnada en esta edición, verbigracia. En esta ocasión, como otras tantas, su aventura pereció a 25 kilómetros del final y si el hilo recurrente se cumpliera no habría conjuntos especializados en formar trenes de sprint ni nadie ficharía a los maestros de las velocidades terminales. Las llegadas masivas desaparecerían y con ellas sus protagonistas, pero por suerte, estas jornadas sirven para ver talentos actuales como Ewan, Démare, Ackermann, Viviani -que ya no sale este jueves- y tantos otros que destilan tensión, colocación, inteligencia, estrategia y fuerza. Mejor sigamos con estas etapas y mantener la polivalencia de este tipo de carreras. Por algo son tan grandes, épicas e históricas.

El líder Valerio Conti dijo: “Mi objetivo este año era tener un buen desempeño en las carreras de una semana y logré resultados positivos en la Vuelta San Juan en Argentina y en el Tour de Turquía, donde terminé en el segundo lugar. Nunca he estado delante de una gran vuelta y desde mañana, con los primeros ascensos, veremos dónde puedo llegar. Terminar esta carrera en el top 10 de la general sería algo importante, pero antes de nada tengo que pensar en defender la maglia rosa mañana. Estoy seguro de que los hombres de la clasificación general atacarán”.
El ganador de la etapa Caleb Ewan dijo: “Era una ruta larga que se adaptaba mejor a mis características que la de ayer. Seguí la rueda de Pascal Ackermann porque sabía que haría un buen sprint a pesar de la caída. Tenía un buen tren, así que decidí lanzarme detrás de él. Comencé en el momento adecuado. Siempre me consideré uno de los mejores velocistas. Dos éxitos en este Giro finalmente me demuestran que tengo razón“.
