Con un dibujo de esos tan de moda últimamente, el Giro Rosa celebraba hoy su penúltima etapa con una jornada unipuerto en la que quien más quien menos esperaba una última exhibición de la neerlandesa Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott), dominadora absoluta de esta edición –con permiso de una Marianne Vos (CCC-Liv) que, olvidada la general, se ha centrado en agrandar su leyenda con etapas– y que, efectivamente, ya tiene más que amarrado su segundo triunfo final consecutivo afianzando todavía más su reinado en el ciclismo mundial.
La jornada estuvo marcada por la fuga de un grupo de siete mujeres en la que se metieron Nicole Steigenga (Bepink), Maaike Boogaard (BTC Ljubljana), Hannah Barnes (Canyon-Sram), Kelly Van den Steen (Lotto-Soudal), Malgorzata Jasinska (Movistar), Kseniya Dobrynina (Servetto) y Rachel Neylan (Virtu). El septeto, eso sí, nunca terminó de tener el permiso claro del pelotón, que no permitió que se su ventaja se fuera más allá de los tres minutos con la clara intención de darles la puntilla en las rampas finales del Montasio.
Así, con poco menos de 20 kilómetros para la línea de meta, el pelotón se echó encima de las escapadas y la carrera, como era de esperar en una etapa con este perfil, volvió a comenzar ya con las favoritas entrando claramente en juego.
Van Vleuten decidió ejercer de líder y se colocó al frente del pelotón. Su mera presencia, vigilante y desafiante, hacía que el resto de las corredoras, que ya han comprobado que están varios pasos por detrás de la neerlandesa en este Giro, prefirieran mantenerse a la expectativa dejando que fuera Van Vleuten la que escribiera el guion.
La de Mitchelton-Scott fue la que, con ocho kilómetros por delante, formó un primer grupo en el que, junto a ella, se colaron su compañera Amanda Spratt, Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans), Lucinda Brand (Sunweb) y Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (CCC-Liv), aunque finalmente fue la campeona del mundo (y ganadora de esta prueba en 2015 y 2017) la única que pudo aguantar el ritmo de su compatriota.
Por detrás, Spratt se quitaba de encima a Moolman-Pasio. La sudafricana evidenciaba que no iba a poder pelear por una etapa a la que australiana se agarraba con uñas y dientes. Nada más pasar la pancarta de 5 kilómetros a meta, Van der Breggen trató de sorprender a Van Vleuten, pero la portadora de la maglia rosa no tuvo problemas en responder a ese cambio de ritmo que, eso sí, provocó que Spratt, que estaba acercándose de nuevo al dúo de cabeza, cediera ya un terreno irrecuperable para ella.
Espoleada por la afrente, Van Vleuten dejó clavada a la corredora del Boels-Dolmans con un ataque seco a cuatro kilómetros de meta. La mejor ciclista del mundo trató de protagonizar un nuevo soliloquio con el que dejar atado su segundo Giro Rosa y sumar su tercer triunfo parcial en esta edición, el undécimo de su carrera. Consiguió lo primero, pero Van der Breggen, que no se rindió nunca, pudo alcanzarla a poco más de 200 metros y acabar superándola en la línea de meta.
