Nada más darse la salida, Léo Vincent (Groupama-FDJ), Marco Mathis (Katusha-Alpecin), Ilia Koshevoy (Willier Triestina-Selle Italia), Dario Puccioni (Sangemini-MG.Kvis), Filippo Zana (Trevigiani Phonix-Hemus 1896) y Alberto Amici (Biesse Carrera Gavardo) formaron un sexteto que llegó a rodar con una ventaja máxima de cinco minutos antes de ser neutralizado ya en la parte final de la cakkkrrera.
A falta de 30 kilómetros para la línea de meta, ya en la última vuelta al circuito final, Cesare Benedetti (Bora-Hansgrohe), provocó un corte en el que se metieron Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida) y Davide Ballerini (Androni-Sidermic).
El trío consiguió abrir hueco, pero a falta de doce kilómetros para el final, el pelotón neutralizó el ataque, pero apenas rodó compacto unos metros antes de que comenzaran los movimientos de algunos grandes nombres como Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) o Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe).
El polaco, rápidamente cazado por un grupo en el que apenas quedaba una veintena de corredores, volvió a intentarlo al seguir el cambio de ritmo que a ocho kilómetros para el final protagonizó Ivan Santaromita (Nippo-Vini Fantini). Iván Sosa (Androni-Sidermec), Sergey Firsanov (Gazprom-RusVelo) y Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida).
El esloveno se lanzó a tumba abierta en el técnico y peligroso descenso final abriendo un pequeño hueco que sólo Marco Canola (Nippo-Vino Fanitini) se atrevió a tratar de cerrar. Los dos corredores entraron en el último kilómetro separados por apenas 6 segundos.
El duelo entre ambos fue tan corto como intenso y, pese a que el italiano consiguió acercarse mucho, no llegó a coger la rueda del esloveno y finalmente no pudo más que ver, desde la impotencia de los 20 metros finales que no consiguió cerrar, como Mohoric levantaba los brazos triunfador.
