Tres años después el campeón olímpico Greg Van Avermaet ha repetido victoria en el décimo Gran Premio de Montréal, segunda de las pruebas canadienses del World Tour tras el GP Québec. Tras los 220 kilómetros de carrera, el belga del CCC ha superado por velocidad al italiano Diego Ulissi (UAE) y al español Iván García Cortina (Bahrain) que de esta forma sube al podio.
Un sprint selecto de 18 unidades que estuvieron a punto de impedir los franceses Benoit Cosnefroy -que atacó en los 10 kilómetros finales- y Julian Alaphilippe que saltó después del gran trabajo de su compañero Enric Mas controlando la ofensiva de Tim Wellens. Peter Sagan intentó las conexiones internas entre la veintena destacada, pero se quedó sin gas en el final. Sí lo tuvo el asturiano del Bahrain que no pudo con sus dos acompañantes del podio, pero se queda con la foto del tercer cajón mostrando una buena forma para tratar de estar en el Mundial de Yorkshire. Lugar donde figuraba la última victoria de un Van Avermaet que será otra de las referencias en la próxima cita con el arcoíris.
