Alvaro Hodeg ha ganado la cuarta edición del renovado Heiste Pijl tras imponerse al sprint en un grupo reducido. El colombiano de Deceuninck-Quick-Step pudo poner en práctica su punta de velocidad para sobrepasar a Jasper Philipsen (UAE) y Rory Townsend (Canyon DHB) en meta para sumar su tercera victoria de la temporada y la novena de su carrera profesional. Para el equipo belga suponía el triunfo número 40 de la campaña 2019 pero minutos más tardes, en Suiza, Yves Lampaert conseguía sumar la 41ª en la contrarreloj de Goms, calcando los números de la pasada campaña a estas alturas del año alcanzando finalmente las 73 siendo la cifra record de la escuadra de Patrick Lefevere.
La edición 2019 del Heistse Pijl comenzó con una fuga compuesta por seis corredores para determinar que el final no sería en un sprint masivo como podría parecer. Jordi Meeus, Timothy Stevens Minne Verboom, Rory Townsend, Jimmy Janssens y Guillaume Seye se unieron permitiéndoles ganar una ventaja máxima de unos 4 minutos. No se esperaba mucho de estos seis, pero tres de ellos lograron mantenerse durante mucho tiempo en cabeza, Townsend, Janssens y Seye comenzaron con una pequeña ventaja los últimos 20 kms.
Sin embargo, las cosas fueron particularmente rápidas en el pelotón desde entonces. En parte debido al trabajo de caza por parte de Deceuninck-Quick-Step, interesados en la posibilidades de Hodeg. Trabajo que seccionó el grupo en pedazos, pero Townsend, Janssens y Seye parecían mantenerse fuera del alcance. Pero con el final a la vista, comenzó el festival de ataques por parte precisamente de los velocistas Hodeg, Philipsen y Dries De Bondt, buscando su oportunidad.
Estos tres corredores lograron unirse a los líderes tres de cabeza en el dramático último km, lo que suspuso un caótico sprint por la victoria. En última instancia, fue Hodeg quien completó el arduo trabajo de sus compañeros de equipo pudiendo arrancar con fuerza para sorprender a Philipsen que tuvo que conformarse con el lugar de honor más ingrato, mientras que el tercer cajón sería para un Townsend que veía escapar sus opciones en el último instante.
