Tras dejar la carrera encarrilada en la cima de Willunga Hill, Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) sólo tenía que cuidarse hoy de evitar que Richie Porte (BMC), segundo en la general con el mismo tiempo que él, consiguiera bonificar. Con eso en mente, la última etapa, con principio y final en Adelaida, se planteaba como una batalla táctica entre la escuadra australiana con jefe de filas sudafricano y la americana con líder australiano.
La etapa estuvo marcada por la fuga del hiperactivo Logan Owen (EF-Education First) y Ben O’Connor (Dimension Data), aunque no llegaron a contar nunca con más de dos minutos sobre un pelotón en el que los equipos de los velocistas no quisieron asumir riesgos innecesarios permitiendo una fuga demasiado peligrosa.
Bajo, de nuevo, un calor asfixiante, las vueltas al circuito iban cayendo e Impey, siempre muy atento en la cabeza del grupo, se iba acercando a su triunfo final sin que Porte y su BMC parecieran muy interesados en arriesgarse a sufrir un percance peleando por los segundos de bonificación.
Ya en los metros finales fue Adré Greipel (Lotto-Soudal), ganador de la primera etapa, el más rápido en un apretadísimo sprint en el que consiguió sueprar a Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott) prácticamente en el último golpe de riñón. De esta manera, el alemán pone el tanteador de los sprinters a su favor con dos triunfos y, aunque sólo estemos hablando de los primeros días del año, parece haber confirmado que ha conseguido dejar atrás todos los fantasmas que le lastraron durante 2017.
Carlos Barbero (Movistar) fue el mejor español de la etapa al acabar en novena posición, mientras que Gorka Izagirre (Bahrain-Merida) y Luis León Sánchez (Astana) fueron, con sus séptima y octava posiciones, los mejores españoles en la general final.
